Having a Hard Time with new Friends and Politics Ugh

Anonymous
I moved recently. I've been so grateful to make new friends and get involved in some great neighborhood extracurriculars focused on our kids. Think like swim team. The problem is my neighbors are extremely political. We can't have a conversations without politics coming up. I deflect and do not engage - I've gotten good at this because of practice with family. But it makes me so uncomfortable. And the actively promote certain political stances on their FB pages that I 100% disagree with. Why can't we all just keep our mouths shut and keep our politics to ourselves? Didn't the old adage used to be never to talk about politics or religion? These are nice working people who think that they have become experts on vaccines, masks, Afghanistan, whatever. Believe what you want but for goodness sakes can we all just shut up about it? It's downright painful.... I left DC to get away from all this political garbage and it has infected everything, just everything.

In the immortal words of Congressman Adam Kinzinger, the Republican Party is now “the weird worship of one dude.” Politics has become religion. That’s why deciding what goes into Political Discussion, Religion or Relationship Discussion is getting difficult to decide.

Not caring about politics is a position of privilege OP. Consider that.

Where have you been for the last 20 years? Abroad, perhaps?
The entire country is very comfortable talking about religious, political and sexual topics.

Are their political leanings what you'd expect given the neighborhood? If so, then you clearly didn't think your new location through, OP.

Why are you FB friends with your neighbors? That's your first problem...

There is no need to inject it into every conversation. If you feel the need to whine to other people daily, you’re abusing your relationship with them.

Unfollow them on social media and steer in person conversation away from politics.

If they’re outspoken trump supporters just end it with them. Seriously you don’t need that racism and vile spewing in your life. You’ll find new friends that don’t think we should inject Lysol or that the whites are the master race or that grabbing by the p-sy is locker room talk.

oh I care. But there’s a time and place for debate. Swim practice is not it.

Op here, fb is the preferred medium for parent group communications.

Then make new friends. It's that simple.

Yeah pretty sure the new friends are not the Trumpers.

My friend on the left are as dogmatic as my friends on the right. This behaviour is not exclusive to one party.
