Having a Hard Time with new Friends and Politics Ugh

Trumpers are fearful, stupid cultists, Democrats are conservative AF, the only thing that will ensure the survival of the human race is progressives ready to take action. Not people who care about pronouns, that’s a distraction by both sides. Religion, capitalism, consumerism will kill us while you conservative idiots spew hate and so-called liberals engage in arguments with the crazies. Humanity is done.

Yeah pretty sure the new friends are not the Trumpers.

Exactly.

I’m the poster of this and oh snap I didn’t catch that! Ha ha ha!

If you’re a trumper why would I be friends with you, OP - you say shit like unmask our kids and the Capitol siege was a tour ha! And I bet you’re friends aren’t talking politics but saying things like “we should accept and care about everyone” or “we should help refugees” which I guess triggers you.

Be thankful they talk to you even, I sure as hell won’t, I cut the trumpers out of my life.

I find it fascinating that in your world people are either trumpers or leftists. There are actually a good number of people in the middle. Moderates who are not happy with either side and are sick of the sanctimony from both of them.

OP, here’s my advice:
1) ignore all FB posts unless they relate to event planning for the kids. Once you are more esconced start a Snapchat thread or something saying you are getting sick of FB ads or FB tracking you (both the left and the right hate that!)
2) when politics talk start, listen politely for a few minutes but don’t engage and then change the subject by asking about their home renovation, what washing people recommend, which are the best fourth grade teachers, where to buy a decent birthday cake, what your MIL said about your new haircut, foods your kid refuses to eat, etc etc. All that standard non political popular topics!
3) decide for yourself what lines you can’t cross. If the conversation is racist or crosses whatever other line you have, say something and burn the bridge or just get up and walk away to use the bathroom or check on the kids (extinction method). There are some friendship not worth maintaining.

I think the political talk will decrease when we get past this moment. It’s been a rough couple of years and I feel like politics has infected everything in our lives in a way that’s not good for everyone. Vaccines and medicine shouldn’t be political. I’m hopeful we get back to a place where not everything has to be polarized.

This is a dumb take. How do you know OP’s neighbors aren’t all left wingers? I’m moderate and I’m sick of my liberal family and friends who constantly talk about politics. It’s exhausting.

Of course you think you’re “moderate.” Who doesn’t? It’s like saying “I’m pretty.”

OP didn't say she doesn't care about politics. OP would like to go to a swim meet and cheer on the kids without listening to adults argue about politics.

My friend on the left are as dogmatic as my friends on the right. This behaviour is not exclusive to one party.

True. And don’t you know the real Maga abandoned FB?

For Covid reasons alone, why are you socializing? I assume your kids are unvaccinated.

Rolling eyes. No. My 13 YO and I are vaxxed. It's just us. It's an outdoor activity and after a year and a half of being in the house with me, she needs to be out with other children. This activity has been great for her and she's made a lot of friends. She's about to go to school in person with these kids starting Monday. (We left the DC area).

DP..

Does the school/town have a high vax rate and mandatory mask in school? If not, I'd be more worried about that.

I don't blame you for socializing outside, but I'd think twice about socializing outside with people who aren't vaxed or don't mask up.

You can be wealthy but underprivileged in other ways.
