Did your 9 year old watch Stranger Things?

Anonymous
My 9 year old, starting 4th grader wants to watch Stranger Things at his friend's house. Friends are 9 and 7, and have been watching it with their parents. Parents let them watch movies I wouldn't allow for my son (Goonies, Stand By Me, others), and don't bat an eye. I can't decide if I'm being over protective.

Other than the scariness, I'm uncomfortable with some of the denigrating language and sex/make out scenes.

What's your opinion. Did you/would you allow it for a 9 year old?

off the top of my head I can't really think of too much language/sex scenes, but the scariness alone has me saying no thanks for a 9 year old

My now 11 year old did with her sister and cousins. I think it just depends on the family and the kid.

Stranger things is fine for a 9 year old but why wouldn’t you watch it as a family?

Op here. I'm rewatching now, on episode 3. I agree that if he really wants to watch, we should watch it together. There's lots of stuff that is wayyy over his maturity level. There's nothing totally explicit, but more making out than he's ever seen. (In bed, taking off their clothes). The teen boy pressures the girl who says no over and over again until she happily says yes. It feels like these are things a parent should discuss with their kids, but there's no need at age 9 so....why bother watching, maybe?

The scariness may be too scary for him, but not sure.

No. Not even my 11 year old has seen it.

Damn. Op here. This scene where the teens are saying
"I told Me (teacher) that X times Y equals blow me " then going on to talk about the teacher is probably a virgin and the teen girl should blow him. Yeah, I'm not letting my 9 year old watch with friends.

Op here. I wonder if there's a show out there with similar themes geared towards younger kids, without the older teen stuff. I do think ds would like the mystery and the story line about the younger boys and the general idea of what's going on with Eleven.

Holy crap, no this show is not appropriate for a 9yo boy. Way too much sex and rape culture for kids who have no context of that. Girls and women are repeatedly victimized in the franchise and it gets worse and more graphic in later seasons.

We have aquaintances who watched this with their third grader. Not cool to overhear what the kid was telling classmates. Parents acted like too cool for school "ha ha kids say the darndest things, we're such bad parents watching this show with Larlo, wink wink, pass the sippy cup wine."

No, I loved the show but my 11 yo has been begging to watch it since he was about 9 because his friends talk about it. I will let him watch it when he's older, but not yet.

I abhor those kind of parents.

One of the best aspects of distance learning was keeping my kids away from these kinds of families.
