Did your 9 year old watch Stranger Things?

I honestly don't remember any sex scenes in this series.

I think the first season, maybe the first 2 (except for the character getting eaten by the demodogs) are fine, but the later seasons have a lot of really nightmarish images. The people melting in Season 3, the girl getting twisted up in Season 4? That's a level of gore I wouldn't be comfortable with until the kid is older.

What was the rape scene? I don't remember the show very well.

There wasn't a rape scene in Stranger Things.

I let my teens watch it. But no, I wouldn't let a 9yo watch it.

I think they're talking about the scene where the female lifeguard gets held down and possessed. Season 3 really is quite dark.

Yes, that scene is really sexual assault codes. And then she physically dissolves on screen later. Even as an adult I found that image terrible.

My 10 year old watched it. I think it depends on your kid, their maturity level, and your comfort with talking about things. I don't shy away from having sex convos with my kid and explaining what she's hearing. She will and has heard far worse on the school bus.

Mine started at that age, shes 17 now.

yes, but only 1st and second season

No, my son was not allowed to watch Stranger Things at 9. He is 10 now, and we haven't watched it. The most intense thing we have watched together is probably the Percy Jackson series.

I'm the PP directly above you, and I'm curious, too. I also wouldn't put Goonies and Stand By Me in the same category in terms of appropriateness for a nine year old. Stand By Me has much more mature content, whereas Goonies is pretty goofy (I think).

DP but I agree. Both of my kids saw Goonies well before 10. We watched together and there was a little inappropriate glimpse of a girl’s leg, a little kissing, and a little bad language (and some IMO cartoonish violence of course). Doesn’t seem inappropriate on the whole.

We watched goonies with our 12 and 9 year olds and didn’t find anything too inappropriate, BUT they were both kind of scared by the body in the freezer! I had forgotten about that!

We watched the entire series with my 10.5 year old daughter and 13 year old son. I wish I hadn’t let the 10 year old watch it but I’m glad we did it together. I made her cover her eyes for some scenes in the later seasons and also fast forwarded through a few disturbing scenes in Season 4 that even I wasn’t comfortable with. She had nightmares a few times but also really connected to some of the characters and coming of age storyline. I would say 12 is okay if you have a mature kid that doesn’t scare easily.

Too scary for my kids

I’m a mid-40s normie who isn’t particularly upset by sexual content or swearing. But I had trouble with the scariness and dramatic tension of Stranger Things. I ended up giving up the series early because it wasn’t relaxing or enjoyable for me. (And I aknowledge this is a me issue because so many people love the series.) I wouldn’t have a kid watch it without parental supervision because some of the more sensitive young folks have trouble processing things and self-advocating when it feels like too much.

Depends on the kid. My kid is not that scared by things like monsters and gore. if I had a more sensitive kid then 9 would be too young.

I was definitely more scared than he was! I couldn’t even watch it until I googled to make sure Will doesn’t die. Later seasons were less creepy but the first two were nightmare fuel!

I get that. I never would have watched it except it was still during the pandemic and I had Covid for the first time and needed something to do. It is definitely not my type of show (I am a Bridgerton gal!) but I ended up being drawn in by the world building and the strong character development.

My 10 year old asked to watch it and I
agreed to watching the first season with her as a test run. She was hooked instantly and was so sad when she reached the end of the series. We’re seeing it on Broadway over spring break.
