VADOE adjustments to advanced math track

Anonymous
Am I going crazy or wasn't there a thread in this forum re: the proposed changes to advanced math track? Came here because I remember some links to presentations in that thread which were helpful, but can't find it. Was it deleted for some reason (which would be a shame, had some good info/discussion), or is it in another forum instead? I tried a couple other forums but didn't find what I was looking for. Any link to the original thread or links to the evolving materials/presentations they have shared would be greatly appreciated!

It appears someone reported it. You can ask Jeff it can come back with a disclaimer or something, since it is useful:

I asked Jeff to fix the thread title since it was wrong. But he deleted it instead.

Virginia Mathematics Pathways Initiative Community Informational Sessions
Tuesday, May 25, 2021 - Advanced Pathways in Grades 11 - 12

Notes from tonight’s meeting:

They are still in “building” phase - proposal won’t be presented until 2022

First draft to BOE 2022
Crosswalk 2024-25
Full implementation 2025-26

Pilots for some new classes start in 2023

School systems can build own courses and allow students to take in any grade (accelerated path) — **this has always been the case**

They blocked out grade levels from infographic to avoid confusion

ALL upper level classes are still offered
Will support AP and IB as do now

Foundational Concepts <<<< K-7
Essential Concepts I-II-III <<<< 8-A-G-A

Precalculus <<<< Mathematical Analysis
Added Data Science II to the list

Rest of world thinks it’s weird to break out A-G-A; better to connect concepts

Example path of accelerated student (just an example - districts are not restricted to this):

The person who kept saying it was all misinformation and threatened to report the post the admin appears did so and the admin agreed without checking the facts and deleted the thread.

That's really too bad, since there are multiple figures on the record (ex: Megan McLaughlin) indicating that from what she knew, parents had every right to be concerned and should be watching what VDOE is doing with the math standards.

Parents should certainly be engaged, but they also shouldn't be spreading misinformation.

There was no misinformation, just your choosing to believe VMPI's current statements over their past statements, even when they have clearly lied about 'this has always been the case' that school districts could do tracking and acceleration.
They clearly backtracked and pretended it was not a backtrack. This is a lie.

Even with the backtracking, it is still a taking away of advanced math in practice, because VMPI is kind of winging it trying to do multiple things at once.
They want to put algebra/geometry/algebra 2 blended together in grades 8-10 so as to maintain a path to calculus.
Then they want this to be available for all students, so they are throwing prealgebra in there as well in the same grades 8-10.

Currently, school systems can track and offer acceleration. At no point in this early "building" phase did VMPI say they were removing those options.

They briefly discussed detracking in one meeting and have a link on their website but that was it. People speculated and jumped to extreme conclusions before waiting to get more information.

VMPI's Tina Mazzacane confirmed they would eliminate tracking when someone asked about it in e-mail.
This was exactly the plan until there was a backlash. A backlash that you tried to prevent at the time by saying people were speculating, while previously saying this was what other states are doing and we needed to get with the program.

An aspect that has been largely ignored is that VMPI wishes to move away from rote problem practice and computation and push towards practical problems.

Not a coincidence that this is something they have not walked back.

Yes, I can see this being done well or (more likely) horribly. I am even more concerned about this than tracking.
