Arlington Tech and College

How do Arlington Tech students fare in college acceptance? I only know a couple, and I'm impressed by their college plans.

I heard that for this years class, 7 got into Va tech and 1 Harvard. Don’t know anything beyond that.

7 sounds low.

Out of a class of less than a hundred students? Not really.

It's much higher than that. They did well.

Ok that makes sense -- I forgot it was much smaller than the other highschools.

Remember that the acceptances are recorded based on their home schools

Arlington though that this was going to be the equivalent to Thomas Jefferson High School for Math and Science Technology in Fairfax County, which is recognized by colleges all over the country. Not even close. Colleges see Arlington Tech as a vocational program. It hasn't gotten the traction they had hoped for. Sorry but it's not going to give anyone an edge in the college application process compared to the regular high schools. Most kids with a GPA around 3.7 - 4.0 can get into VT.Washington Liberty gets tons of kids into VT each year.

Arlington Tech was never intended to be like TJ.

This. The concept was originally proposed by parents of kids who were having a great experience in the CC classes. I would expect AT to lean even more towards VA public Us than the other HSs given the school's focus on dual enrollment classes.

Get over yourself.
AT is, first of all, a new program. This is only the second graduating class - and the first class started with 40 students.
Second of all, it's not intended to be a TJSci and Tech. It is intended to be a small, project-based-learning program offering academic rigor and a lot of dual enrollment classes. Dual enrollment is hardly a sign of a vocational program, and colleges clearly understand that -- since they're giving the students college credits for their work!
Sounds like the AT kids are doing just fine and getting into top notch, prestigious universities.

You have no clue what you're talking about.
The assertion that it hasn't "caught on" is debatable. Lots of students apply each year. The waitlist does move significantly, especially in relation to other waitlists in the system. But each class is easily filled each year despite the crappy facilities and APS' failure to invest in the program as it promised. A parking lot of trailers really doesn't do much to lure students. Nevertheless, it has grown as APS has permitted it to grow and will "catch on" more quickly than you think once APS finally properly renovates and expands the site.

Yes that's where they want it to head to. They want a replacement for TJ so they can stop paying to send students to TJ. Alexandria City doesn't send students because they don't want to pay the associated costs. They have also started their own Science Academy programs.

Well, no. It’s not meant to be a replacement for TJ, because it isn’t a test-in program and will not be, but I would be fine eliminating TJ from the budget anyway, with advanced notice. That way, if it’s what you want for your child, you know not to live in Arlington and complain that you don’t have access. I think it will be a great program on its own, especially once it has adequate facilities. I favor adding MS seats here rather than any to Montessori, because this program has legs, but there isn’t any demonstrated interest in a Montessori MS program beyond the one classroom that currently exists.
