Arlington though that this was going to be the equivalent to Thomas Jefferson High School for Math and Science Technology in Fairfax County, which is recognized by colleges all over the country. Not even close. Colleges see Arlington Tech as a vocational program. It hasn't gotten the traction they had hoped for. Sorry but it's not going to give anyone an edge in the college application process compared to the regular high schools. Most kids with a GPA around 3.7 - 4.0 can get into VT.Washington Liberty gets tons of kids into VT each year.

Arlington Tech was never intended to be like TJ.

Yes that's where they want it to head to. They want a replacement for TJ so they can stop paying to send students to TJ. Alexandria City doesn't send students because they don't want to pay the associated costs. They have also started their own Science Academy programs.

DP. Do you even live in Arlington? Because it really doesn’t sound like you know what you’re talking about.

No, it isn't. They DO want it to be a top-quality rigorous academic program - and it is. But it is project-based-learning, heavy on dual enrollment. It is not specifically geared to mathematics and science and engineering, though those things will figure prominently as they do in most college-prep programs.

APS has shown its desire to stop paying to send students to TJ by recommending doing so in its budgets at different times over the years. But the SB and the community push back because they think it's critical that 18 students from Arlington get the opportunity to go.

Alexandria has good reason to end its relationship with TJ and focus on its own programs. Amazon is paying for new education facility and program for Alexandria. Something Arlington CB just can't fathom even asking a business or a developer for because "schools" isn't its responsibility.
