Mom in trouble for leaving 4 year old with 14 year old sibling.

This is almost unbelievable. What a crappy neighbor! There have been threads where people ask what age it is okay to have a sibling watch younger siblings. Most everyone would agree that it would be fine to have a 14 almost 15 year old watch their younger siblings.

A few thing...

1. I don't think we are getting the full story
2. It seems like an over reach on the LEO side.
3. This is the second time the 4 year old escaped. While I completely agree that a 14 year old is able to watch their sibling (I was babysitting at that age) it actually requires her to watch the sibling.

Hopefully the charges are dropped and hopefully this is a lesson for the 14 year old that she needs to watch the 4 year old more closely.

The 14 year old was apparently incompetent to watch the 4 year old but the mom habitually left her in charge. Per the article this was the 2nd time law enforcement was involved.

I woube surprised if there were lots of times the neighbors witnessed neglect and a lack of supervision.

"The Union County District Attorney’s office says while it understands Henderson’s difficult situation, it says this is the second complaint the child wandering outside alone and that a warning was issued the first time."

Wouldn't

This has happened twice before, a four-year-old shouldn’t be wandering alone.

The Union County District Attorney’s office says while it understands Henderson’s difficult situation, it says this is the second complaint the child wandering outside alone and that a warning was issued the first time.

Where’s the deadbeat father and how is she supporting five kids on ‘a few hours a day’ of work?

This isn't as simple as Mom having the 14 year old babysit. The 14 year old was not babysitting and the 4 year old was alone outside, on multiple occasions. Its appropriate for CPS to get involved.

It is doubtful that the 4 year old was outside by himself everyday. That would be a different situation then a kid who wanders outside once in awhile. This mom might need to put an alarm on her outside doors so they know when he goes outside because of the neighbor. There was a time when a good neighbor would call or walk the 4 year old back home, and only call 911, if nobody was home, or if this was a frequent occurrence. It sounds like this was not a frequent occurrence.

The article said twice in a year. That is not multiple occasions.

If you agree with this, then, anyone, who has had a kid wander outside, while they had to use the bathroom, or answer a call, or tend to another kid, should put an alarm, on their doors, because they are negligent, if this happens, a second time, a year later.

An alarm on the door isn’t going to do anything if the parent isn’t in hearing distance. Hence the word ‘alone’.

This is another article. This looks like a beautiful and happy family. Mom is probably doing her best and her daughter must feel just awful about the whole situation.

If it were as loud as a smoke alarm, then everyone would hear it.

The parent literally wasn’t in the neighborhood. There is no way to ‘hear’ it and the reason why the neighbor called the cops.

Her daughter shouldn’t be responsible for a toddler and has no reason to feel bad. What has the mother been doing this whole time that she can’t afford a certified babysitter? What job does she have? What educational level?
