Neighbor poop can

Anonymous
One of our neighbors has a waste can for their door that is starting to stink, especially now that we’re hitting some hot summery days. It’s located in their backyard and the smell drifts across several of our yards.

I don’t know the neighbor very well, but we’ve made polite small talk in the past. Pet owners, any tips here or suggestions on how to approach the neighbor? I’m honestly surprised it doesn’t bother them as I’m sure the smell is stronger in their yard.

Thanks!

OP here - typo “for their dog” not “for their door”

I have a trash can which I use to throw away my dog poop. I change it regularly. However, if you approached me I wouldn't do a thing. There is no nice way to approach me and you can't do anything about it if I don't agree.

Where else am I supposed to put my dog waste? If you were my neighbor I would tell you to stop having loud parties.

Where else should they dispose of their dogs waste? Honestly wondering what you think they should be doing?

Seriously...the alternatives are not picking up the poop, or....??

Nothing to do about the neighbor. Put some nice smelling items in your backyard for when you are out there.

Do you think they should store the dog poop in their main trash can in their garage? Then wouldn’t their garage stink?

Does the trash can they currently use have a lid? If not, that’s the only reasonable thing you could request.

By any chance are you close to Murch?

We put our in our trashcan in our garage. Usually does not smell except for very hot days or end of the trash cycle. It does NOT smell outside the garage.

I think it’s very weird to have a special dog poop trash can.

We do (a small metal trash can with a lid, lined with a trash bag of course). We keep it in the backyard because that is where our dog poops- just easier. We take the bag out weekly then night before trash day.

It does not smell at all (except when we remove the lid of course).

Yuck. I’m guessing the can does not have a lid and/or they don’t empty it often enough.

That will eventually attract animals. Ew.

OP how do you know it drifts across several yards? If you are a house or two away, could it be another neighbor with a smelly trash? Or do a few neighbors get together to discuss this particular trash can? If the last point, it may be more polite/neighborly to engage with the neighbor than to chatter away and internalize ill feelings. Perhaps they have terrible seasonal allergies and can not smell the extent of the issue. Or perhaps they were recently out of town and did not think to take care of it.

You noted that the waste can is now smelling now that we are hitting hot summery days - is the dog or neighbor new? If either, my vote is to engage - it could be that they could double bag the trash can, use some sort of deodorizer, or move it to a section of the yard that catches less wind. A longstanding neighbor with a dog is more difficult.

I don't think any more than a lidded trash can with actual food...
