One of our neighbors has a waste can for their door that is starting to stink, especially now that we’re hitting some hot summery days. It’s located in their backyard and the smell drifts across several of our yards. I don’t know the neighbor very well, but we’ve made polite small talk in the past. Pet owners, any tips here or suggestions on how to approach the neighbor? I’m honestly surprised it doesn’t bother them as I’m sure the smell is stronger in their yard. Thanks!
OP how do you know it drifts across several yards? If you are a house or two away, could it be another neighbor with a smelly trash? Or do a few neighbors get together to discuss this particular trash can? If the last point, it may be more polite/neighborly to engage with the neighbor than to chatter away and internalize ill feelings. Perhaps they have terrible seasonal allergies and can not smell the extent of the issue. Or perhaps they were recently out of town and did not think to take care of it. You noted that the waste can is now smelling now that we are hitting hot summery days - is the dog or neighbor new? If either, my vote is to engage - it could be that they could double bag the trash can, use some sort of deodorizer, or move it to a section of the yard that catches less wind. A longstanding neighbor with a dog is more difficult.
