How much can you generally negotiate a used car price?

Look at used Toyota Camrys. Let's say the ad asks for $18,000? Will they usually drop down to $17,000 if you try to negotiate or even more? Understand this is a tight used car market but want to understand what leverage, if any is available.

Apparently used car prices are going up. There’s a shortage of chip parts to make new cars with, which is putting upward pressure on used car prices. I wouldn’t count on having much leverage these days.

At the moment, zero. Used car prices have actually gone up in the last few months.

Whether u want to finance with them is a factor too fyi. So if they know they are going to make 5 years of interest off you they are more likely to go lower on the up front price. I would figure out your financing first so you don’t get screwed on that, then have an idea in your head that you won’t pay more than. For an $18k car I would try and knock 1k off if I’m buying outright. 2k off if I’m financing thru them. Also, know the value of your trade in too before you negotiate. If you live near a Carmax get a trade in quote from them first. It’s good for 7 days.

Depends when you go. A few months after the new model year hits you can get a deal on new previous model year cars as the dealers want to get rid of these. Depends on the make and model. If you enjoy haggling and are not timid about possibly wasting a salesperson’s day, you can get a deal good deal. Also try to view salespersons as prey - look for the weakest most desperate of the pack and make them your mark. They’re doing the same to you. That being said they sales manager is often very good at at playing rope a dope so know you are outnumbered when you walk in.
