Why does checkout at Macy’s take so much longer than Target?

Anonymous
Being 3rd in line at places like Macy’s can literally take 30mins, and at target you can be 10th in line and it takes less time. I understand self checkout is faster but can’t figure edit why the checkout process at these department stores are soo painfully slow.

Because Macys is a sh*t show and people are always trying to use 400 coupons and get a deal. Then there is the effort it takes to even find a place to pay.

And they have to remove the security tags.

This is why I don’t shop at traditional department stores anymore. At places like Kohl’s and Target, there is a checkout area. There might be a line, but you know there’s a cashier at the end of it! I can’t even locate registers at some department stores, with their random placement!

Also, they probably have antiquated DOS based POS systems. Everything takes longer when you’re using 30 year old computer systems.

And don't forget that Macy's also adds that personal return sticker to everything. Makes it easy to return without a receipt, but also makes more work at checkout.

I haven’t been to or ordered from Macy’s in probably ten years. What do people like to buy there?

They take time to fold and tissue wrap the clothing?

I always wonder this. It always feels like they are pushing way more buttons on their computers than necessary. Honestly, I feel the same way at the airline counter.

Okay but Target can lookup a purchase with the swipe of my card, also no receipt.

They have to add stickers to everything. Then scan those stickers. It's ridiculous.

Lol, nope. Not for the past few decades at least!

I agree that Macy's is ridiculous. Here is their process:

-remove clothing from hanger (or not)
-scan item
-scan sticker, place sticker on item
-remove security tag

repeat with all items, then either hang and wrap in a bag, if on hangers, or bag everything at the end of the purchase.

And the cashiers always move slowly, it never seems as if they are trying to expedite the process in the slightest.

YESSS Why are airlines so slow?

Macys and other department stores are much, much slower than other clothing stores like Banana Republic or whatnot and they're in the same mall. They're always having trouble with their systems too. I can't remember the last time Target had an issue with their system.
