Why does checkout at Macy’s take so much longer than Target?

Anonymous
Macy’s must be the same nationwide because I live in Kentucky and they are unbelievably slow here as well. My husband needed a new suit and I swear we were there for over an hour between finding someone to help with sizing and checking out. I ended up sitting with old men waiting on their wives outside the dressing room.

Macy's is the worst. I haven't been in one in years, but they are so slow if you can even find a checkout that's open. Several years back I was trying to order a red dress online and they kept sending me a purple one instead! And when I went to the store where the dress was supposed to be in stock, they couldn't find it.

I love shopping at Target because they are so quick with everything- checkout, returns, Drive-up.

Target has a belt, scanner, and consistent barcodes. Macy's has counters, tags all over the place and handheld scanners and people using coupons and writing checks.

I was just there at the Tyson's Macy's. I'm 42 so I guess I'm old. They still have some decent clothing if you need professional items, but it's all overpriced. They also have a lot of really awful stuff, too.

because they expect you to use a coupon. Any store that has the kind of coupon distribution that they have marks up in anticipation of a coupon being used. It makes me never shop there because I don't have coupons. JC Penny tried to get rid of coupons and lower prices, but all the coupon hoarders rebelled because they were no longer getting a deal.

NP. An elderly relative used to always get me Macy’s gift cards for Christmas and I wanted to pull them aside and tell them not to waste their money there…like, for the gift card amount I can buy a single glove that’s been marked up 400%.

(Atleast airlines there needs to be more security & confirmation of information. ) Everything is done, paid online, all information given, sometimes es even have the room number, but it is still a 20 minute process with 1,000 key strokes. I will usually pick one hotel over another if it has self-check in with cell phone room"key"

Big issue with Macy's is no one knows the price. The tag is never the actual price, the signage is confusing, the coupons are complicated. The customer always wants to know the price before purchasing and it takes 3-4 steps to get to that.

LOL at hotels, so true!! I would love to see some of those screens.

And totally agree you never know the price at Macy's, or what posted discounts actually apply and to what.

Macy's is a glorified Marshall's with worse customer service

But at least Marshalls has that checkout area where a computerized voice even tells you which register # the next customer should go to! 😁

Point for Marshalls!

My mom worked for Macy's.. the managers push sales people to make quotas for signing customers up for credit cards.

Macys always asks me a bunch of questions trying to get me to open an account with them. Their computer is also a bit slow.

I think everywhere should be run like Marshalls/TJ Maxx. And, that especially goes for the airport.

Once I was at a Macy's and there was one cashier, she was exceptionally slow, and she didn't seem to understand what was going on. As I was leaving, I noticed some other associates without any customers (there was no one around when I initially got in the long line). I told them that there was a cashier alone with a huge line and they told me that they only worried about their own department. And no, I'm not a Karen. I've worked retail before and that seemed wrong to me. I didn't say anything else, but I know when I worked retail, there was more of a "let's help each other out" attitude.

Yes! I've never seen one younger looking than 55.

The only thing that Macy’s has going for it is that the cashiers aren’t as snotty as Bloomingdales or Nordstrom. I swear some of those ladies just flat out refuse to help you unless you look super rich. Nasty women.

Yup. TJ Maxx/Marshalls clearly hired someone with a degree in Operations Research (OR) to make things as efficient (and fair!) as possible for their customers. I love the efficiency and process improvements as much as I love the bargains. (I swear I don’t work there—I’ve just got an OR brain.)
