Why does checkout at Macy’s take so much longer than Target?

Anonymous
Hah, I don't think I've shopped at Macy's in over 10 years... odd now that I think about how often I used to

I was Macy’s today and they announced over the speaker that their Macy’s reward cards weren’t working.

I think it’s the return stickers. They have to scan each item and the return sticker for every item. It takes a lot longer. I also seem to remember the registers at Macy’s being a lot smaller, so the cashier has less space to work. and they don’t have the belt or flat scanner like at Target or Kohl’s, and using only a hand-held scanner takes a lot longer.

Macy’s is still in business?

-remove clothing from hanger (or not)
-scan item
-scan sticker, place sticker on item
-remove security tag

repeat with all items, then either hang and wrap in a bag, if on hangers, or bag everything at the end of the purchase.

And the cashiers always move slowly, it never seems as if they are trying to expedite the process in the slightest.

And why would they? They make the same amount if they go slow or faster.

What is Macy’s? Is that some place the old folks go to?

It’s the store at the end of the mall that says “MACY’S” in gigantic glowing letters.

Macy's is old school. They've been around before the 1950s. Target has not been around that long, 60s. But, when they rebranded and renamed their store to Target in the 90s, they upgraded everything and still doing that now. You see alot of upgrades. Meanwhile, Macy's old cash register looks the same.

Okay but Target can lookup a purchase with the swipe of my card, also no receipt.

Do you have to have a Target card for this to happen, or can they do that on any card you used to purchase the item?

I ordered my mattresses from there last summer. Everthing online, great delivery, hauled everything away, and with the deals, cost less than any other place I could find that sold the same stuff.

I order things online from them sometimes but won't go in the store. I feel awkward in department stores.

DP. MOST stores can look up your returns with any card, not just their store card. I can’t speak to Target specifically. If the store has an at all updated POS system it’s pretty easy.

Whatever card you used to purchase the item. It's great.

Macys is really much more of a “gift” store — think wedding registry, Christmas bonanza (Macys Thanksgiving Day parade after all heralds in Black Friday).

Those stickers mean anyone can return it easily, without receipt, without a card, which is really really valuable
