This is what the US should do also. It's what Korea did, their case numbers are going down and their CFR is under 1%.

I don’t think death is THE critical factor. It’s one of them. Getting intubated, staying in the hospital for two weeks, the pain of pneumonia, all of that is no joke. I am encouraged that there have been no deaths there but it really isn’t the only thing we are trying to avoid.

Reddit is full of German posters decrying the strict testing policies in most (not all) areas of Germany. They are completely incredulous that there are zero deaths in Germany. People who were admitted to the hospital with pneumonia without having been tested are being recorded as flu deaths. Unlike Spain, Germany has done no retrospective testing of untested pneumonia deaths.

Hmm, interesting. I guess why that explains they are now over 950 cases but no deaths recorded.

How many recent elderly pneumonia deaths in the US do you think may have been covid19?

Not everyone 60-80 is retired. All of my specialists are over 60. DH’s oncologist is 61. Many lawmakers and school administrators are over 60. Things will falter if they stay home.

Have no idea, but Seattle did retrospective testing of recent pneumonia deaths from residents of the LTC facility and found two from before they knew there was a problem and added them to the death toll.

Also my spouse (also black) is a healthcare provider, so is staying on top of their hospital’s current guidelines and other developments. But we don’t know anyone AA who really really seems to be panicking.

I'm white and I don't know anyone IRL who is panicking either. It seems mostly online paranoia and the media.

People are aware. And taking some caution (my parents are active in retirement groups and events are being cancelled left and right at retirement homes/senior centers). But beyond that it's not doom and gloom.

PP here. Yes, my mom is similarly active at a senior place she frequents—she planned on taking some reasonable precautionary measures, like staying home more (she’s normally out and about during the day, even in mid-70s). Will call and check on both my parents today.

There haven't been any hot spots in quite awhile - since Iran or Italy. So far very few outbreak areas. A good sign.

If this was really snowballing, we would see continuous new hot spots developing around the world but we are mostly seeing a more typical flu season like pattern.
