Maryland is giving away 2 million dollars in a "vaccinated lottery"

Well this is interesting. Not a MD resident, but I don't know how this would work for those of us who got fully vaccinated outside of the state registry.

Those who receive a COVID-19 vaccine in Maryland have a chance to win some serious cash thanks to a new incentive program from the Maryland Department of Health and the Maryland Lottery, Gov. Larry Hogan announced Thursday.

Drawings will begin May 25 and continue for 40 days, through July 4. Those who win will receive $40,000, except the July 4 drawing, which will be offering a grand prize of $400,000.

“Entry is very simple — all you have to do is get vaccinated here in Maryland, be a Maryland resident and be 18 or older,” Hogan said.

I was going to make fun of it, but the more I think about it, I like it. As a PP said, it's fun and anything that nudges people toward the vaccinations is a good thing.

It's probably actually cheaper to give away 2 million and then be able to close vaccination sites earlier, than keep them open longer. And hey, if it encourages the knuckleheads in rural areas to go get their shot, I'm all for it!

So embarrassing to be an American these days. We must bribe our citizens to get a life saving vaccine that the rest of the world is begging for. Seems pretty clear that the US will never regain its moral standing in the world since at our heart we are a bunch of selfish idiots.

Great idea, hope it encourages more people to get vaccinated! In our little family of 42 of us got vaccinated in Maryland and the other two went to Pennsylvania to get vaccinated. It’s only half the family is even eligible but I do not care. The win, win is if more Marylanders get vaccinated

Ohio is giving away five $1 million prizes to adults and also holding drawings for five full rides (incl. room and board and books) to state universities for 12-17 year olds who get vaccinated.

You realize that vaccine hesitancy is not some uniquely American phenomenon, right? In some parts of Sun-Saharan Africa upwards of 70% of individuals surveyed said they would not get a Covid vaccine. We’re lucky that our country has resources to help entice some of those on the fence.
