How did you find your hobby and what is it?

I need a hobby. All I do is cook, work, exercise and be a mom.

If you have a hobby, what is it and how did you find it?

Mine change all the time. Right now it’s YA fantasy novels (tiktok got me into that), but I have also done:

history audiobooks (I needed background knowledge for doing homeschool, and the great courses series is amazing)

baking (great British baking show got me into that)

skincare (wrinkles motivated that one)

writing (I have always been into writing)

changing up my exercise routine, trying to get good at something in particular, like swimming

I used to feel like I just needed one hobby and it has been freeing to just let myself do whatever interests me at the moment.

I towed in high school, missed it but can’t afford it for myself, but when I found out about an adaptive team nearby that needed experienced rowers to row with athletes with disabilities I jumped at the chance! Now I get to volunteer and do my favorite sport at the same time!

Rowed not towed. Darn phone.

I went lake and ocean kayaking on vacations and loved it. Now I have an inflatable kayak and also rent kayaks regularly. I keep looking into buying one but need to work out the storage issue (I’d want to pay to store it near water because I don’t want to have to haul it to the river). It’s very peaceful, accessible if you are reasonably fit, and can be done alone or with others. It’s great.

Check out the Anacostia Community Boathouse. People rent storage space there for all kids of boats and it’s a beautiful spot on the anacostia.

Mine change. I’ve always been a reader and I’ve always loved swimming and “exploring” — walking around, shopping, checking out museums and galleries, paying attention to architecture. At different points I’ve taken up knitting, cooking, ice skating, guitar lessons, yoga, tai chi, sketching, and even taken a few crafts classes.

Most of it has started with following my curiosity. If something looks interesting, I’ll try it — at least once.

Thanks, I will!

Do you have friends or neighbors that you can talk about this? I find that sharing a new hobby with others helps. This is how I started swimming.

I never thought of "skin care" as a hobby. You have to be a SAHM.

Gardening and then making my own salsas, hot sauces, and pickled veggies. I have a greenhouse to grow my seedlings and then plant them outside in late May/early June (I live in New England). I have about 100 plants this year.

I have three main ones: music (traditional/ folk), beading and collecting and restoring old Coach bags.

I am a stay at home mom (most homeschool moms are, I imagine) and yes it’s a hobby for lots of people! There is a lot of chemistry that goes into it and it can be really fascinating. I follow several cosmetic chemists on Instagram and I have learned a ton.

Oh I thought of a couple more hobby phases I have had:

Learning a foreign language

Interior design (just my house, not helping anybody else with theirs)
