This is a fun thread!

Interior design and decorating my house
Houseplants
Birdwatching
Reading DCUM before bed
And my newest hobby, riding horses!- I started taking private riding lessons this winter and LOVE it. I’d never been near horses before and it’s super satisfying. It’s also a practice in mindfulness, you have to be super present.

I’d love to find a similarly mindful hobby I can do at home. Loved the paint by number rec earlier so might give that a try. Or flower arranging.

painting - my grandmother and great grandmother painted, I would paint with them when I visited their vacation homes
running - after first year of undergrad wanted to lose some weight, loved it
podcasts - got into it a few years ago, makes lab work and chores fly by
walking/hiking on trails - while dealing with a running injury I started walking with my training partner, now we are back to running together but I have other friends I can walk or hike with and go almost daily in our area and trails most weekends

I dance salsa and tango, I play guitar but I'm pretty bad, and I'd like to learn Farsi. (I've got French, Spanish and Portuguese pretty much down, though they're all quite similar).
I also love flower arranging and interior design.
I collect random vintage things, like lingerie pins, compacts, fans, and perfume bottles. I spend a lot of time roaming in antique shops.
I got a dog a couple of years ago and I've become fascinated by animals, and dogs in particular. I've actually considered studying to be a vet tech.

Oh and I also love baseball and baseball history/trivia.

Always have been into sports - basketball, tennis, etc.

The past 5-7 years, though, it's been latin dancing (salsa, cha cha cha, bachata). Absolutely love it.

Hey, pp, do you mean classes?

PP here. I used to do classes at a ballroom in Bethesda eons ago to dip my toe in the water. From there, I’d take classes wherever there was social dancing afterwards. I’d go to barking dog Tuesday nights, Havana village, etc.

This was all pre pandemic but there were classes everywhere and every day of the week - you have a few options for classes:

1) find a regular dance ballroom where they teach salsa
2) find a social dancing calendar online. These events typically occur at a bar or something where it’s open dancing. Usually, they have a class befoerehand
3) find a salsa dedicated dance school. There are several in the area. I attended one in silver spring called dcstylesalsa. Owners are super nice people and of course, great dancers.

When I first started to learn, I used 1 and 2 pretty exclusively. The better I got, I moved to 3. Lately, though, I just go out social dancing and don’t do any classes.

Feel free to AMA - been in the scene for almost 10 years.

Gardening! I love it. Gets you outside and you get the benefit of fresh flowers for my home and veggies too.

Most would agree that Michael Jordan was excellent at his job, and yet he found time to gamble, play golf, and form "special friendships" with women in different cities. Research has shown that many high achievers cultivate skills or interests in several areas. I am actually going to go look up Einstein's hobbies. He surely had some.

The hobbies attributed to Einstein were biking, sailing, and playing the violin. He somehow found time to stop and play with children on his way to work too. Astonishing!

The book I meant to reference was David Epstein's 'Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World.'

One of my hobbies is gaming on a PS4. I use to think gaming was shooting stuff, but it involves puzzles and quite a bit to keep your mind and reflexes active. I have friends from all over the world. If I happen to get up at 2:00 am I know my European friends will be on.

What a nice social distancing way to socialize
Thanks for the tip, I shall try this

During the pandemic I turned one room into my gaming room. Through PSN you can get free games, and buy some that are very inexpensive. Try different ones to see what you like.

I call it isolation.
