UGH as a former skinny person I hate my arms right now. They're big and skinny.
How much weight do I need to lose to reduce my arm size? I currently weigh 116 lbs at 4'11. My best look was when I weighed 104 lbs. |
| You need to lift heavy (in combo with eating right). Contrary to what some people think, lifting heavy will not make you bulk. |
What is lifting heavy? I use 6 lbs and 8 lbs presently. |
I think it means that doing like, three sets of reps leaves you at the point of failure. I could do three sets of 10 bicep curls with 8 pounds VERY easily, and while I workout I'm not like some crossfit gym rat or anything. Doing 3 sets of 10 bicep curls with 25 pounds and I'd probably be close to muscle failure, if I could even finish that at all. And I think in the end it means like, doing pull ups until you fail (bicep curls with your whole body). So pick a weight where you think it would be legitimately challenging to finish 3 sets of 10 reps with. |
| Pushups - regular and tricep. Way more effective for me than lifting smaller weights ever was. Even doing them on knees and building up to fully extended legs. |
When people say "lifting heavy" they are usually referring to big, compund movements done with a barbell that target your whole body -- barbell back squats, barbell bench press, barbell overwhead press and deadlifts. "Heavy" is less of an absolute number and more the idea that you'll do most exercies for only 5 sets of 5 reps rather than like 100 bicep curls wiht a 5 pound weight. Beginners start with an empty 45 pound barbell (or less for women with upper body stuff) and slowly add weight with lots of attention to correct form. These days, very many women are discovering these lifts and loving how they look. Check out "New Rules of Lifting For Women" or "Starting Strength" or "Stronglifts". |

| This doesn't apply at the extreme end but I've found that most men who lift heavy end up strong but fat and most women look great. |
| You can’t spot reduce fat. You could lose 20 lbs and none of it be in your arms. You need to diet and weight train. |
That’s because men like to do stupid workouts like their 3 rep max on benching. They’ll spend all this time at the gym setting up a bar, getting spotted, lifting their 3 set max, then sitting while the other guy sets up his bench and they spot him. Meanwhile women are lifting for volume. |
| I lost a lot of weight after losing my DH. I look good except for my wrinkly upper arms. Do I do weights for that? |
Except that this is EXACTLY what they should do if it's what their program calls for. It's stupid to call someone's training stupid without knowing their goals, experience level, training history, etc. Based on your response ("lifting for volume" lol) I'm gonna guess that powerlifters at your gym doing sets of 3 with long rests know a lot more about programing to meet their goals than you do. PP - Powerlifters eat to support maximing strength, which means they often end up fat. I would be a lot stronger than I am if I didn't cut weight every couple of months to maintain a low body fat percentage. When I'm on a bulk, my lifts all increase as soon as I start eating more. |
Move up to 10 and 12 or 15. |
Lmao. You triggered? |
Because the guys are willing to be fat in order to lift more. It's not about the lifting routine. I'm a weightlifter but I'm not willing to put on weight to get stronger, so I'm not a great weightlifter. |
