Help me break my soda habit - I’m failing!

Anonymous
I’m so addicted to drinking a Coke first thing in the morning and sometimes throughout the day. I haven’t found a substitute for soda that replaces the bubbly jolt I’m so dependent upon. Any drink recommendations or tips for breaking this habit. When I say I’m addicted, it’s almost like medicine for me - it settles my stomach and just makes me feel better to start my day with the fizzy drink and not of caffeine.

I do not drink coffee or tea.

Zerba mates?

If it's the fizz you like, can you swap it for sparkling water? Or buy the smaller cans so you're not drinking as much?

Small can of Coke Zero instead? It tastes the same as regular Coke to me

My co worker had a bad Pepsi habit just like yours. She started drinking those sparkling Ice drinks. They have caffeinated ones and are sucralose sweetened but might be a good intermediate step.

Why don't you drink coffee or tea? Both have health benefits that coke doesn't have.

But the real answer is that you just power through. It takes a month for cravings to go away. Don't buy any more

It sounds like you may be addicted to sugar, which will make you prediabetic and then diabetic.

I can understand the need for a sugary jolt first thing in the morning - when I cut out added sugar, it was easy to do it with food, but very hard to drink my usual tea or coffee without sugar. I managed, however.

That morning jolt can be replaced by caffeine, protein and fiber. Regular protein and fiber intake throughout the day will make you feel full, and also give you long-term energy, which will reduce the sugar cravings.

How do you change, you need a wake up call.
Do some blood work with A1-C included.
Probably you are pre diabetic or diabetic and time to stop this sweet slow poison.

Get a Sodastream. I drink only fizzy water all day long.

I quit sugary sodas in November 2018 and never turned back (gee, kind of sounds like an alcoholic).

I also quit sugar (sweets) 2 months ago and lost 5 pounds already.

Maybe kombucha?

I just recently started drinking it when I was trying to cut back on alcohol. Is it a bit fizzy, a bit sweet, and almost all of them have some amount of caffeine...

I'd either do completely cold turkey or a step down.

To step down, first replace one aspect of the coke. Maybe coke zero to cut the sugar. Or try caffeine free to cut the caffeine. After that, have another fizzy alternative. Maybe something fruity, but still a soda, like the San Pellegrino fruit sodas.

The point it to just break the association with the coke making you feel so good.

After you've transitioned off the regular coke to another "thing" then try another step. So if you go to coke zero, after having one in the morning, switch the seltzer instead of a fruity soda.

Then after a few weeks, cut the morning coke zero and go straight to seltzer.

Buy only a few cans of regular coke and ration them throughout the week.

Drink a LOT of plain water as a replacement and stay busy.

Don't buy it. You will get over the withdrawals sooner or later. Maybe try Izze sparkling drinks instead of soda until you drop the habit. I liked Izze until I realized how much calories they are.

Coffee in the am for caffeine and then soda stream worked for me.

I switched form a lifetime soda habit to sparking water a few years ago. It wasn’t easy...sparkling water used to taste like punishment to me.

I just did it (Coke Zero) cold turkey. I was like you, one every morning then depending on the day I could have 2-4 more. I first limited it to just once in the morning. And then none. I went with a soda stream and add in the lime flavoring. It is really good. And it lets me make it extra fizzy.

I do get a soda if we go out to eat which is almost never now so it has been working well.

Good luck.
