Really sad-so many kids have gained weight during covid

Anonymous
Schools closed for a year, virtual PE, no recess.

My 4th grader had his first (rec) soccer practice last night. Most of the kids haven’t played since Fall 2019 and we haven’t seen most of the boys in his team since then. Wow. Out of 11 boys, five have gained significant weight, three have gained some weight and most of them were completely exhausted after half the practice. These are a mix of suburban poor/MC/UMC kids. So sad that our society has put them last for a year.

My 5th grader played basketball this winter and had several boys on his team from last winter. Two out of seven had easily gained 10-15 pounds and were out of breath not long into practice and games. Our school system (FCPS) has had almost all kids home all year. I agree, history will really judge us for how children were prioritized way below everyone else.

Very sad. Absolutely a travesty that the well being of kids has been such a low priority for our country. I think we will be seeing the ramifications for years.

Put them last? Were they not allowed to kick a soccer ball in the backyard?

Yes, kicking a soccer ball alone is super fun and just as much exercise as three hours of practice and a one hour game every week with friends, PE, recess twice a day, and all the other seasonsal sports and activities that were canceled.

How does one kick a soccer ball alone? Don’t you need someone to kick it back to you? And how is that cardio, exactly?

Parks/playgrounds were closed for several months last spring.

Against a wall! Or practice footwork. My kids does solo soccer drills outside all the time. Same with baseball drills you can do them by yourself. When kids are off electronics to get pretty creative.

I agree. My second gained a lot despite still doing some fall and winter soccer.
The funny thing is on his soccer team the kids that go to the local catholic school are all in better shape. The ones that go to public are all out of shape. Must be because the public kids are all tied to a computer chair for several hours a day.

This is how my son did it. Not too familiar with soccer, are you?

Why did your kid sit out the fall season? I know last spring shut down, but I’m not aware of any clubs that weren’t playing this past fall.

Would you kindly take your dickish nature back to the private school forum? We don’t need you infecting the rest of DCUM.
