Really sad-so many kids have gained weight during covid

Anonymous
My kids both gained weight, although I think my tween is actually taller so it evened out. But yes, it is tough. I didn’t have the heart to take snacks away from them too after such a tough year. But that all ends now.

My kids have never been more active. We spend 2 hours at the playground every afternoon/evening. Why? Because they need to move their bodies!! We've been doing this since last summer. Rec sports and recess are not really ever enough for most active kids.

This is how my son did it. Not too familiar with soccer, are you?

Not a soccer person myself but this seems a little difficult to use in an apartment without a yard.

You obviously lack grit. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps (or soccer cleats!)

If you're a white UMC family, then you have no excuses for your child getting fat.

What do you think should have been done differently to prevent this, OP? It’s obviously not a good situation but I’m not sure what the solution should have been. In my opinion, there was sadly no real safe option pre-vaccine except for kids to stay home from school and activities/sports and for athletics facilities to be closed to the public. What do you think should have been done?

What does race have to do with it? What if you’re a black or Latino UMC family?

I'm not seeing this at all.

You assume everyone has a backyard.

Everyone has a park.

I love that you think everyone has a safe park nearby.

My kid (12) gained weight for sure. Our fall baseball season was reduced to one practice per week. We had a terrible year all around. Just a few weeks into spring and I can already see him starting to slim down. He’s hating the running at baseball practice, though! Seems like about half the kids are really huffing and puffing, though there is always some of that at the start of the season. I’m sure most of them will recover just fine.

One of mine gained weight and the other didn’t. My heavy child would love to spend all day outside, but none of the friends want to. My skinny child sits in his room all day.

How old are your kids?

Also, they cost probably $70. It’s so gross when people assume every family can afford the same things.

Parks were closed for a significant portion of the year. A park close to me is still closed.

Absolutely this is a thing, and I've gained weight too. Every living person just experienced a huge, life-altering event. Some people will shed as we get back to normal(ish) life.

But also, just in case this is your oldest child, I should also mention that a lot of boys chunk up right before puberty. Then they grow like CRAZY, with a few chunk-out/sprout-up type phases. I'm sure the pandemic may have added a few pounds as well. But some of this is probably due to their ages.
