| Stone Ridge Kids won’t be reading tkam this year. Email sent out to MS today. Because of racist language and because Harper Lee was white so she shouldn’t write about black people. Students are unhappy about it. Me too. |
| Your kid can still read the book. There are plenty of great books out there; no curriculum can read them all. Teachers make choices. Sometimes it's time to move on to new titles. |
| Students of color learn nothing from being forced to read this white savior narrative. Worse yet they are forced to listen to the n word over and over. Just because it meant something to you once upon a time as a white person does not mean that it is a good choice for students today. This is well documented. I am white FWIW. Stone Ridge is moving in the right direction. Well done. |
+1 Holton also. |
Agree. |
Disagree. It’s one of the all time great American classics. Yet another deficit in true education to omit this work. |
It’s a shame they stopped publishing classics in the 1960s then. Nothing of value since. No way to learn about literature or culture or history without this one dated, hateful book. |
| Lol. I think the offensive white savior narrative isn’t in tkam, it’s here on dcum. |
This. If you think your daughter’s education is incomplete without this book, read it with her and discuss it with her. I bet both of you will enjoy it. Easiest and cheapest supplementation ever. |
Why do you consider it a classic? Serious question. Are there not plenty of others that qualify? Why does any school HAVE to teach this one? |
It's not so incredibly insightful or well-written that it warrants a "must include" on any reading list. It's somewhat interesting, but honestly out of date. |

Americans hate the classics, and can't seem to appreciate art and culture unless it's absolutely squeaky clean according to the latest strictures. It's a shame. Thankfully, for books, it's nothing a little home reading can't remedy. I particularly appreciate Rudyard Kipling, Nobel Prize in literature. Despite his colonialist and misogynist views, he wrote some of the most evocative prose in literature. |
There are many many classics and not all of them can be or even should be included in every syllabus every year. While it’s not a class requirement, there’s nothing to stop students from reading it on their own or even with a parent if the parents feel strongly about its importance. I’m curious to know what books are being added to the syllabus. |
| +1. Our school dumped Macbeth for The Bluest Eye. Just silly. |
Substitute with the "Killing of Emmitt Till" or "A Raisin In the Sun." problem solved. |
