“We need to work w/urgency to identify & fix what is not working for students of color, students w/ special needs/English Language Learners, & at-risk students.” ummmmm |
| I mean...if you think DCPS was serving these kids well before the pandemic you are mistaken. This has not helped in the slightest, but DCPS has NEVER served kids with disabilities well at all. So I don’t think this particularly tone-deaf. DCPS has lots of problems and returning to inperson learning is not going to solve them all. Something has got to be done and things have got to change so that all kids can receive a good education. |
OP. I have a kid with an IEP. The tweet is really shameless. You can’t be keeping kids out of school and claiming that you care. |
“something” has to be done ... hmmm whatever could we do to improve education in DCPS? such a mystery. |
No you are right. We can’t. But we also need to acknowledge that DCPS does a crap job of educating kids with IEPS. They suck. The graduation rate for kids with IEPS should be it’s own scandal in DCPS. |
+1. Robert White supported WTU's efforts to not reopen for these vulnerable students in November. This was a last ditch effort my DCPS to get only 11 vulnerable students per grade back in school after WTU thwarted plans to reopen for more students. He was instrumental in getting the November reopening canceled for my SPED kids who were falling further behind their neurotypical peers with distance learning. Never forget that that Robert White has NEVER been a friend of SPED, ELL, and homeless children (many of whom are children of color). What's truly disgusting now is how Robert White and Janeese Lewis George are feigning concern about equity when in fact their proposed legislation (below) would give more power to WTU by 1) moving schools under the SBOE whose membership is very pro-WTU and 2) changing the laws to allow WTU members to serve on the SBOE which is a conflict of interest. They claim that teachers "care deeply about children" so they should be able to govern the school system. WTU has already demonstrated to the world that they don't care about the children. Schools would be LESS likely to fully reopen and further harm vulnerable students if this legislation passes. All Robert White and Janeese Lewis George care about is their WTU endorsements. They're truly garbage people. https://lims.dccouncil.us/downloads/LIMS/46557/Introduction/B24-0080-Introduction.pdf?link_id=1&can_id=bbc811007deb13d59a24d144d29111ef&source=email-ward-4-dispatch-vaccine-news-tech-equity-and-how-to-make-a-difference&email_referrer=email_1091008&email_subject=ward-4-dispatch-three-new-bills-vaccines-and-the-dc-budget |
I should add that Robert White also opposed reopening in February and again supported WTU's efforts to thwart reopening in February. Anyone who thinks their legislation would do anything other than hamper reopening is a damn fool. |
Well, you clearly have an axe to grind with WTU. At the end of the day, it’s the mayor and chancellor’s fault that schools are not open. Millions of kids with strong teachers unions are attending school in person right now. I’ll be happy to see OSSE and the SBOE have more autonomy from the mayor’s office, personally. I don’t think it really matters if DCPS teachers serve on the SBOE one way or the other, but I’ll be damned if charter school teachers can while DCPS teachers cannot. I’m sick and tired of the mayor prioritizing charter lobbyists while traditional public school advocates get crumbs. |
I don’t care about your other arguments. But charter teachers are allowed to serve on the SBOE. I’m not sure why DCPS teachers being allowed to be on the SBOE would be a conflict of interest. |
| +1. I think having educators in decision-making positions about schools is a GREAT idea, actually. |
This. All y’all whining about the WTU and giving the mayor and Ferebee a pass really haven’t been paying attention. |
| Nope, I’m not having this legislation. Kick the charter teachers off the SBOE too - I agree that part makes no sense. But regardless of the terrible way that the chancellor and mayor have handled reopening (which has indeed been bad) WTU has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt they DO NOT have the kids best interests in mind. They advocate only for themselves. You can say that’s the purpose of a union, which is fine, but they absolutely should not be allowed to run the schools with no oversight! Completely unacceptable. |
The Mayor and Chancellor are absolutely to blame for not exercising their authority to order teachers back to work, but DCPS would have already reopened for everyone who wanted to return back in Fall 2020 if it wasn't for WTU's opposition to reopening with the support of their political minions like Robert White. |
This. All of it, but especially the bolded. |
Please email the mayor, chancellor, deputy mayor for education, and all council members to let them know you oppose it. WTU and their supporters are already pushing hard for this. |
