Is there an app that has really helped you exercise and lose weight?

Anonymous

I'm struggling to maintain an exercise routine and keep to a nutrition plan, so I was wondering if there was a really good app for that. I've used the free version of Cronometer in the past, but I'm not a fan of the interface and I've got the impression it doesn't log accurate exercise calorie loss. Perhaps none of them do?

Any advice is appreciated!

Peloton has really helped me to keep to an exercise plan but you’d need a different app for nutrition. Losing weight starts in the kitchen. I don’t have experience with weight loss apps so can’t help you there.

For me it has been online weight watchers and 100% tracking what I eat coupled with the activity tracking PLUS the friendly exercise competition with two others I share on our Apple Watches.

There is no way to accurately track exercise calories and you really shouldn't worry about exercises calories anyway. If your goal is fat loss then you just need to track calories consumed. There are a number of calorie counting apps like My Fitness Pal and Lose It.

I also like the Slay it app to tack my consistency. I changed the emojis so I can track the type of exercise I did. I also use a green X or a Red O to track whether or not I hit my calorie target for the day.

Strava, especially because I have friends on starva.

Agree. I also have a Peloton, but rarely use the app. Fitbit makes it easy, and for me very motivating, to keep on top of the calories I am taking in, and how much I am exercising. I love to see the streak of some movement every day and hate to miss a day. I also have the Fitbit scale and very much appreciate the log of my weight fluctuating. It is both motivating to see an overall downward trend, but also to get a sense that there will always be fluctuations, etc.

I honestly don't even pay much attention to the core step counter (or the water or the stairs, etc.) I do like the period tracker as well though!

OP here. I haven't paid attention to the Fitbit craze, tell me about it! I understand there is a range of products - which one might be best suited for me (keeping track of exercise and calories)?

Fitbit is awesome. I have the Charge 2, but they already have a version 4 of it. I absolutely love it. It logs your steps and heart rate automatically and you can record your workouts too. I first bought it when I was using the baby weight and found it very useful as it provides you with an estimate of your calorie burn which was a good starting point for me to determine my calorie intake. It is not exact but it worked pretty well for me. It was also pretty eye opening to see that I actually burn more calories on days when I walk a lot and am generally active compared to days during which I do one hard workout but sit on my butt otherwise. Worth the investment for me for sure.

The free FitOn app. I love the variety of classes 24/7 even in the free part of the app.

I started tracking what I eat via Lose it last August, and it has definitely helped me monitor my food intake. I will say that I think the allowed calories per day for weight loss is rather high. I wanted to lose 7 lbs. and it was way off with the projection of when I would lose it based on the suggested calories.

I’ve had great success on MyFitnessPal. Admittedly, I’m having to try different things to lose the last 5 lbs, and I’m really not interested in perpetual food logging, but we’ll see when I reach goal weight.
