Hot-mic moment captures how some educators really feel

A lot of the things said by California school board members in this article echo some things posted by teacher on forums here. Absolutely shameful:

Any more shameful than the crap given to teachers this year? I think not.

Teachers really out here in control of schools opening claiming they’re the most oppressed. They’re like right-wing Christians.

Shameful for these school officials to mock their own constituents like that. They have lost all moral authority in my eyes. Good luck getting me to vote for another school bond proposal!

The first paragraph:

Thinking they were in a private forum where they could safely vent, a group of San Francisco Bay area school board members unleashed months of pent-up frustration with parents, dismissing them as marijuana users desperate for free babysitting almost a year into the pandemic.

Have to say, parents totally deserve it this year, and plenty of other years for many reasons. Fully empathize.

Sorry- not sorry.

One board member has already resigned.

As background, about 45% of the district is eligible for free/reduced lunch, only 26% of students are considered proficient in math, and it's considered a highly diverse school district. The majority of the population is Latino (approximately 70%).

The board members who made the remarks were majority white, speaking about a majority Latino population.

It's funny because it is the wealthy white parents who seem to want their babysitting back more than the low income Hispanics.

+1. And I am a parent; not a teacher.

No. Thar is just the rhetoric the unions are putting forth, but as you can see from this example, Latino parents are extremely concerned about the total loss of education as well.

That having been said, I do think white voices are dominating the conversation. They dominate the union rhetoric too.

Some of what they said:

"They want to pick on us because they want their babysitters back." - That one resigned.
"Are we alone? B----, if you're going to call me out, I'm going to f--- you up. Sorry that's just me!" - Still on the board for now.
"My brother had a delivery service for medical marijuana and his clientele were parents with their kids at school." - Still on board.

Also:
"Uh-oh. We have a meeting open to the public now."

You can see the meeting on twitter. What's interesting is that parents were smart enough to record using another device ahead of time; the board was clearly not trusted.

I bet the FCPS board members and good old Kimmy Adams say that and worse about parents here.

The entitlement is mind blowing.

Like it's soooooooo outrageous for taxpayers to expect school teachers to either actually do their jobs or to quit and stop getting money for nothing.

It is indeed super fun and sexy to ignore the actual racial dynamics being discussed here and substitute your own.
