Hot-mic moment captures how some educators really feel

Not even snowflake Canada is putting up with teachers refusing to work!
Ontario did another stay-at-home order on the 26th of December. Most of Ontario opened last week. Schools started in-person instruction in mid-January! No bars and restaurants were open for indoor dining, but schools were open.

The derision that white teachers have for their Black and Latino students is awful, especially when they are also exploiting those families in their efforts to continue to block the families' access to education. It is horrific.

These are the same teachers who are arguing that they shouldn’t go back into school because POC prefer in-person (but not all!) I notice they erase the ones who DO want to be in person. Treating them with disrespect, outright racism and some paternalism seems to be what these teachers are doing. They can’t even be bothered to use culturally competent language.

That is so easy to do. So easy. Just say Latino. And yet here, even this one thing is a step too far. It’s clear these people are the ones using POC families to get what they want.

I feel so bad for the kids they teach.

Sorry, what are you even talking about? What are you referring to? The school board’s comments about parents? Or do you have some additional verifiable source where there are teachers talking about Latino students? Because that isn’t what happened here.

The teachers in this thread talking about their Latino students. Also, the white teacher who was on the board talking about the mostly Latino families.

Do you think we can't see that teachers unions are overwhelmingly white women? Do you think we are blind?

??? DP. I don't think you're blind as much as ignorant about how life works. Who, or I guess what, exactly, do you think most teachers are? White women. If you want other teachers and leaders, people who are males of color or females of color, then they need to go to become certified as teachers and teach. Until that starts to happen, the teaching profession will continue to be dominated by white women. Your ire is misplaced. Instead of blasting the people who are doing it, you should be kicking butts to get people of color to choose education as a major or to do a career switch into teaching.

There are actually already programs specifically designed to attract men of color to teaching (see NYC Men Teach). Perhaps education is dominated by white women because it is not a viable career path for people who aren’t married to someone who earns significantly more money than they (statistically, white men). How many people can afford to support a family on 30 or 40k? Please don’t quote the highest possible salary for an educator to make (after working for 20+ years and accruing student debt from getting a doctorate or second masters) as evidence that most teachers are making six figures. The average teacher salary in the US is $61,000 a year.

Kind of irrelevant to here, where the salary range STARTS at 60k.

WRONG. It starts at $50k for FCPS. Here is the pdf (https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/FY21-teacher-194-day.pdf). In a county where the median HHI is over $151,000.

Right. Seems adequate until you consider the cost of living. Making 1/3 of the median HHI means living paycheck to paycheck, not being able to save for college or a home, or have an emergency fund. Not really the kind of career path you’d go into to try and support a family as the breadwinner. If educators were better compensated, you’d have more people willing to go into it (and not just those whose salaries are supplementary to the higher household earner).

That and median rent. I wonder what it is for a 1 bedroom.

Where is “here” that they are starting at $60k?

Your comparison makes sense only if you consider the household income of teachers to the median HHI. Otherwise, you should compare average salary to average salary. Which in FFX seems to be about 60k.

So, roughly the same as the median HOUSEHOLD income in the U.S. And most people aren't trying to support a family on one income.

Those aren’t educators. They are elected school board officials. And frankly, their observations are spot on. The way some parents have behaved the last year is scandalous and worthy of derision.
