Fat and Running a 10k on May 1. Will I fail??

Anonymous
I just signed up for a 10k May 1.

My stats:
43F
190#s
5'9"
High cholesterol, high blood pressure
Mainly sedentary
Poor diet

As little as 5 years ago, I was 50#s lighter and worked out 6 days a week and ate very well. I ran half marsthons regularly ans did a few Ragnar races. Then depression hit me like a fuc&ing train. I did not actually know what it was. I just thought I was in a rut.

I finally went on Prozac for PMDD and lo and behold, my mental health took a 180 and my God I feel so much better. I had no idea I was feeling so bad, until I felt good. However those 5 years killed my health.

It's like I've forgotten what it's like to exerxise and run. If I start tomorrow, with a run /walk for 60 min a day do you think in 3 months time I will be 10k ready?

You can do it! Make sure you prepare ahead of time.

Yes. I'm planning in moving 60 min a day in a walk/run to start though I'm guessing my run part will be pathetic. I will also do some leg strength building exercises so I don't blow out my fat knees.

You can absolutely do it. Get the thought out of your head that you can't. Your body knows how to do this, it just needs to be reminded. I'm excited for you, you'll feel like a different person in a few weeks... just keep at it.

Hey Friend!!!

Start back with couch to 5k. It will feel kinda crazy and a little antsy but this way you will not get hurt. As soon as you are done couch to 5k roll right into 5k to 10K. I have been there and yesterday in the snow I bundled up and ran 4 miles. It was a joy.

Lots of fat people are great runners! It’s nothing to worry about. You just have to train like everybody else. Have fun!

I know a lot of people who lost weight running and they ran HEAVY..like 300 lbs. You can do it. Be careful of your knees.

I know a fat woman who runs 2 marathons a year!

This!!! I also know plenty of heavier runners. You will be fine. Running it without training will certainly set you up for failure. Just get out there and start training.

Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement and couch to 5k recco. I'm definitely worried about my joints. I need to do something now that I no longer want to lay in bed and sleep all day.

You will be fine. If you are moving 60 minutes a day, running or walking as your body is ready, you will be fine. Even is you only do this 3-4 days a week, you can cover the race distance. I’d keep your goal as “to finish injury free” and not any specific time goal.

Have you watched Brittany Runs a Marathon? You might love it right now.

Congratulations! This is great!

I've been curious about that. How come all that running doesn't make them skinny? Eat a lot?

I’ve never looked at Couch to 5k, so it may already be like this, but look for jog/walk programs too. Some people train to do marathons like this (with walking segments during the actual race too). You do set intervals of walk time then jog time. You don’t have to run the whole thing to finish! Good luck!

Also, if you’ve been very sedentary for awhile, don’t feel like to have to do a whole 60 minutes tomorrow. Work up to it.

Aim to run a 5k by the end of March. And then add on. Walk as much as you need.
I still can’t run a 5k straight but I “try” to run 10ks frequently-if that makes sense. Lots of 13/14min miles!!! You can do it.
