| Strangely, they're asking for teacher recommendations and a PSAT score. The test is optional but it's quite telling that they are asking for these items that the school board didn't address. |
| I think sophomores are still expected to have some qualifications. They only changed it for freshmen. |
| I'm taking the SAT on March 13 for this. They made it optional, but I think you probably have to have a good score to stand out. |
|
I think that we need to get clarity on a few things.
1) How many spots are there in the class of 2024. The website states "The number of students who can be accepted to the sophomore class is based in part on student attritionStudents cheering at TJHSST. In recent years, the number of admitted sophomores has ranged between 5 to 15 students. ". However, the school board expanded the size of the class by 50. The current class has 450 students, so there SHOULD be room for 100 more students. 2) The Test. The website states "PSAT/SAT scores". However, There was a "next steps" that stated that the PSAT/SAT was going away for Sophmore/junior admissions. |
| 3) Are there geographic preferences? Say, does a child from Edison have a better shot than a child from McLean? |
There is a PSAT 10 planned for April. I wonder if that would be acceptable? |
From the "next steps". https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/goto?open&id=AN5K2X4D2092 "289. Explain how this new process will work with the process to select Sophomore transfer students. The Sophomore Application process will remain a part of the admissions process. The testing component for Sophomores has been removed based on School Board vote at the meeting in October (eliminating the requirement of a PSAT/SAT). The remaining elements are still in place for Sophomore students to complete an application. If the School Board opts to utilize a holistic approach, no other changes would be required for the Sophomore Round. If the board opts to utilize the hybrid lottery, then a lottery approach would be used for our Sophomore Round applicants based on the Freshman model." |
Maybe at your kid's school but here at Oakton 9th graders don't take the PSAT. If your kid goes to a school where they take the PSAT 10, that will most certainly work. Just remember that your kid has to get in the 90th percentile in the PSAT 10, or else there isn't any point in even submitting the score, as tj says you need 90th percentile for it to be a 'plus' for your application. I have to take the SAT and get at least a 1340 (90th percentile score). I took my first practice test last week and got a 1270. I need to raise that score by 70
I wish luck to your kid, tell me how it goes. Also, remember you need an unofficial transcript of past High School taken in ms or summer, as well as 1st semester 9th grade classes. Just email the transcript handler at your school and ask for an 'Unofficial Transcript.' That's what I did with mine, and she sent it right away. Good luck! |
Our DC1 is not interested in TJ so we will be passing on this. DC1 is current senior and loves it. Looks like you are passionate about TJ. Hope you get in! Good luck! |
| So are there 100 slots in the sophomore class? |
Thanks! I've worked really hard to get in sophomore year. I took geometry honors over the summer and am taking econ right now. |
Currently, the admissions page says "In recent years, the number of admitted sophomores has ranged between 5 to 15 students." It doesn't say what the CURRENT year will be. |
Update: I got a 1390! That should be satisfactory for Sophomore Admissions. Thanks for the support |
Does anyone know WHY the admissions office told the school board one thing and then turned around and NOW is implementing the opposite??? TJ is NOT planning for 100 additional sophomores. They are requiring teacher recommendations. They are (after this year) requiring an SAT/PSAT score. Why are they not following their own policies? The class of 2024 is currently profoundly broken. Why not actually follow the new policies and improve the rising sophomore class??? |
You mean the newly imposed policies? |
