I'm taking the SAT on March 13 for this. They made it optional, but I think you probably have to have a good score to stand out.
There is a PSAT 10 planned for April. I wonder if that would be acceptable?
Maybe at your kid's school but here at Oakton 9th graders don't take the PSAT. If your kid goes to a school where they take the PSAT 10, that will most certainly work. Just remember that your kid has to get in the 90th percentile in the PSAT 10, or else there isn't any point in even submitting the score, as tj says you need 90th percentile for it to be a 'plus' for your application. I have to take the SAT and get at least a 1340 (90th percentile score). I took my first practice test last week and got a 1270. I need to raise that score by 70  I wish luck to your kid, tell me how it goes. Also, remember you need an unofficial transcript of past High School taken in ms or summer, as well as 1st semester 9th grade classes. Just email the transcript handler at your school and ask for an 'Unofficial Transcript.' That's what I did with mine, and she sent it right away. Good luck!
