It’s baffling that the admissions office and TJ administration decided to not fill the class at least up to 480 if not all the way to 550. It makes me wonder what is really going on at that place. Why leave so many seats unfilled? On one hand they seem to pay lip service to increasing access to TJ. It might be worth submitting an appeal or even contacting the TJ Alumni Action Group to see if they have any advice.

550 seats is only for the incoming freshman class of 2025.

TJ admissions did not allocate extra seats for Class of 2024 so for sophomore admissions, the number of spots would depend on how many rising sophomores are choosing to go back to their base schools.

They had at least 30 open spots. Under the old rules the class size was capped at 480. The current rising sophomore class has around 450.

TJ is hoarding educational opportunities and only pretending that they care about expanding access. They are trying to only do what is easiest for the adults that tun TJ vs the students that are ready for the classes only offered at TJ.

At this point, I don’t care if my child isn’t accepted. I’m just sick and tired of the armature way that TJ admissions is run. I’m writing to my school board member and cc’ing Brabrand. Everyone who was denied a seat in the sophomore should submit an appeal.

I totally agree with this, how exactly do you submit an appeal?

There is no appeals process for TJ admissions. You can send an e-mail if it will make you feel better, but you will at best receive a form letter in response and there will be no action on your behalf.

There is an appeal process. They don’t publish it - another way they gatekeep low income students. There are two levels of appeal. Email the admissions office and ask them for both appeal forms.

Sophomore admissions are going to be key in the coming years. FCPS cannot keep this same process where virtually no students or parents know even the most basic information.

I hope the WP does an article on this. That is sadly the only way to light a fire under FCPS.

Submit an appeal! The admissions office made many missteps with the sophomore admissions process AND there is plenty of space in the class of 2024. Reach out to Megan Meglagion (sp). She was a huge advocate for increasing the size of the TJ and would not be happy to know that they left empty seats unfilled in the class of 2024.

How exactly can we reach out to her? Is there an email or a website you can provide?
