If we have a lot of snow days this week and they’ve already used several of those embedded snow days at the beginning of the year for the preparation of DL, I though I heard they extend the year past the actual deadline? Like they’re contracted for 10 months so would they have to be paid for those non-contracted days? |
Teachers aren't contracted for 10 months. We're contracted for a certain number of days. Usually 180 plus however many days of professional development the district offers. So, moving a day to the end of hte school year doesn't impact our pay. |
Normally before they add days on to the extra year they'll take away student holiday or teacher work day or what not. |
I know FCPS has about 20 snow days built in, and we Miss nine days at the beginning of the year. So there's still a lot left over. |
Not op. Do we have to work though? I have tickets purchased to fly the day after we’re done. June 18 |
Surely as a teacher you knew that districts change end dates based on snow days. It's always been that way. Buying tickets the day after school gets out is a risk you chose to take. If you have leave, and your principal approves it, then you can go. Otherwise it depends on whether you want a job next year. |
I don't know what district OP was referring to. She asked specifically about situations where days are added to the end. So, I was merely commenting on that situation. I have no idea if OP's district will actually make that decision, they may have days available or find another solution, or declare a state of emergency. |
Not really. I’m friends with the principal so I’m not worried. I’m just not trying to use sick days unnecessarily. Thanks for trying though! Maybe next time 🥺 |
Teachers worked those days so they wouldn’t need to be made up in the contract. |
I am not in FCPS, so I could be wrong, but I have never heard of a school district with 20 extra days. Are you saying that teachers have 20 extra days built into their contract? A 200 day contract? That would be about right from my experience with other districts, but not 200 days of instruction in a year with no snow. |
I would just take a sick day if they extend the school year. |
I was just trying to tell the OP that they were still plenty of days left. |
Not exactly, our contract is something like 194 days, the student days are 180. But our county has added 15 or 20 minutes to each day so that we exceed the state hours. That way, if we have snow days then we don't have to worry about falling below the state mandated hours. When you add up all those extra minutes, everyday, they turn out to be around 20. |
+1 In FCPS it is 194 days in the teacher contract. We have the extra hours in the student calendar but no extra actual “days” beyond their required 180. We have the extra hours to use. That’s why some people don’t understand why there aren’t extra days to “give back” when we don’t use the built in hours. |
DP And you wouldn’t have to use sick days if you still have personal days to use. I’m saving mine for the spring in case my college aged DS’s sport allows spectators in April. If they don’t then I’ll use them elsewhere. |
