If we have a lot of snow days this week and they’ve already used several of those embedded snow days at the beginning of the year for the preparation of DL, I though I heard they extend the year past the actual deadline? Like they’re contracted for 10 months so would they have to be paid for those non-contracted days?
I know FCPS has about 20 snow days built in, and we Miss nine days at the beginning of the year. So there's still a lot left over.
I am not in FCPS, so I could be wrong, but I have never heard of a school district with 20 extra days. Are you saying that teachers have 20 extra days built into their contract? A 200 day contract? That would be about right from my experience with other districts, but not 200 days of instruction in a year with no snow.
Not exactly, our contract is something like 194 days, the student days are 180. But our county has added 15 or 20 minutes to each day so that we exceed the state hours. That way, if we have snow days then we don't have to worry about falling below the state mandated hours. When you add up all those extra minutes, everyday, they turn out to be around 20.
+1 In FCPS it is 194 days in the teacher contract. We have the extra hours in the student calendar but no extra actual “days” beyond their required 180. We have the extra hours to use. That’s why some people don’t understand why there aren’t extra days to “give back” when we don’t use the built in hours.
