Initial boundary options for Crown/Damascus study

I also have been surprised that kentland/Lakeland has not signed any petition yet. It has been so quiet in the neighborhood like no one talking about it at all.

QO is a dangerous and poorly performing school itself. All that’s happening is moving from one bad school to another. People in Kentlands don’t care and already send their kids to private.

I don't think Kentlands/Lakelands view QO as dangerous. The neighbors know the school doesn't perform as high as Churchill or Wooton, but most don't care about that. In fact, many of the neighbors graduated from a W school and chose to move to this area so as to avoid sending their kids to such competative, high pressure schools.

As a Lakeland resident, Quince Orchard (QO) is maybe okay, but Gaithersburg is a definite no without even thinking twice. We would consider private school if Kentland/Lakelands were assigned to Gaithersburg HS. I really doubt that will happen since it’s quite far. Regarding property values, I think there might be a small effect, but nothing dramatic since QO is not one of the top schools. We chose to live in Lakeland because of the convenience. But it seems like pretty much everyone thinks assigning to Gaithersburg is unlikely to happen, right?

I think I am fine staying at QO HS as home school by walking, maybe to crown HS by busing (which schools zone there?) and not sure about Gaithersburg HS ( which schools zone to there)?

I only read the excerpts from the article and not the actual agreement.

But it doesn't seem to say that Crown can't be used as a holding school, while they renovate existing schools, possibly making them bigger and allowing them to have a bigger area feed into them, which would help with balancing demographics and alleviate some of the overcrowding at other schools.

They haven't even identified a need for a HS holding school at all. Many schools can be rebuilt on site without moving students to a holding school. It just wasn't deemed feasible for Northwood, so that's why they're at Woodward now.

Wootton can not be rebuilt on site. They need a holding school. They barely have any land, there is only one entrance to the school on a very busy 1 lane road and they back up to a middle school with shared land. If anything, the new school has to have a smaller footprint (building up) so that they can actually have normal size fields and parking which they don't have compared to all other high schools. QO has more land and may be able to get away with not have a holding school, but the point is the board never thinks or plans ahead and keeps budget costs in mind.

Has that been explored as an option? Frost has 24.78 acres, which is very large for a middle school in MCPS. (15.5 acres is the standard recommended size.)

Most of the land is a massive hill and also streams that is not buildable.

For those who aren’t familiar with Wayside/Churchill, the sense of community from K-12 among Wayside/Hoover/Churchill is unparalleled. Due to lots of shared programs across all three schools and the proximity. This is true for most of the schools in the cluster, but I’ve heard from plenty that Wayside and Beverly Farms have very close communities.

Wayside isn't special. They shouldn't get special treatment. Get over yourselves.

FYI, communities are built. You will build a new one at wootton.

Most schools have tight community. This is not unique to wayside/hoover/churchill. Wayside is not special.

The redistricting needs to happen. Get over it. Your rationale is lame.

This is fantastic news as I am sure these families will continue their unparalleled sense of community in the Wayside/Wootton cluster.

+1

New communities will be built. Learn to pivot. Life will go on and you kids will do fine.

This would be awful on so many levels..... We are all just praying it doesn't happen. I haven't seen any petitions going around though, like the ones in Potomac.
#entitledsnowflakes

+1000000

They are bellyaching because they are moving from the #4 to #3 school.

Talk about entitled …..snowflakes for sure.

Feels like this 64 page discussion could be summed up to:
- W school neighborhoods: dont you dare move my community out of W school (even to another W)
- the rest of the affected schools: We dont mind rezoning as long as we are not zoned for Gaithersburg HS

Why isn't there a petition seeking justice for current 7th graders who will be entering 10th grade when all the changes take effect and forced to change high schools? I think we can all agree that these kids are poorly situated in all this. I wonder if it would really be that hard to at least give these kids the option to finish high school where they started.

my goodness. They will be ok. Lots of kids have gone through boundary changes in the middle of their school years. The kids are alright. It's not like your kid will be the only one moving. Sheesh.

I agree kids have done it before and they will survive, but why not try to minimize harm and disruption? Letting kids finish the high schools they started seems like a pretty easy way to do that.

And definitely not rezoned for Watkins Mill!
