| Anecdotally, do boys take dad’s height and girls mom’s height? In couples where one parent is much taller than the other, where have you seen kids end up? Middle? |
| There's no definite answer. It doesn't matter. Your kids will find a way to live with whatever height they are. |
| If it followed a pattern siblings if same born sex would be sane heights. Not so. |
| Also, dad 6’0, mom 5’2 and I’m 5’4. |
| doesn't matter. Op, please love your children as they are. |

You can certainly love your children as they are and still be curious about how they will grow. And of course there's no way to predict accurately, but on average, they will be in between the two parents (adjusting for sex):
https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/childrens-health/expert-answers/child-growth/faq-20057990 There's no proven way to predict a child's adult height. However, several formulas can provide a reasonable guess for child growth. Here's a popular example: Add the mother's height and the father's height in either inches or centimeters. Add 5 inches (13 centimeters) for boys or subtract 5 inches (13 centimeters) for girls. Divide by two. |
| The opposite - I know so many families where the sister takes after the dad and the boy takes after the mom. |
| Doesn’t work that way, I have 2 girls, one tall, one short |
| Folks, please love your kids the way they are. |

They usually end up in the middle, an average of both parents and adjusted for gender. I’m 5’8” and my husband is 5’11” - my daughters are projected based on current height to be 5’6-5’7 which seems about right since dad is average height, so they are a bit above average but not as tall as mom. My 13 yo is 5’4” now and just got her period so we shall see how much taller she grows.
My husbands parents were 5’2 and 6’1 so you can see how he landed at 5’11. Sometimes there is an outlier with that. There are online calculators that will give you a kids projected height based on parents and current height. |
It’s a question out of curiosity. Relax OP— I’m short and my husband is tall, and my daughters are taking after me. |
This is what I’ve been seeing as well. Or occasionally, the child takes after a grandparent, whose genes skipped a generation. |

OP here. Thank you everyone. Of course I will lovey children whether they are 5’ or 7’. I am curious though... I honestly always wished I was a little taller, but my height has never been an issue and several men (including my DH) prefer smaller women...
I have another question then, at what age do you have an idea of how tall kids will end up being? I read about “projections” our pediatrician never talked about this. I also know that some kids grow earlier and some later (DH was average height until highschool and then shoot up at 15 or so). Thank you |
I grew less than 1 inch after I got my period at 12... |
| It could be neither! My DH is in the 10th percentile for height, and I’m in the 20th. Our son is and always has been in the 5th, and our daughter in the 35th. |
