Height is so unpredictable. There is no way to know until the kid is 20. You can guess, but that’s really all you can do.
|
| DH is 6’2” and I am 5’4”…son is 6’1” and daughter is 5’8” and they are done growing. |
| My parents are 5'0 and 5'2" and my brother is 5'10" and I am 5'4" |
Did they have enough to eat when they were growing? |
This was my post! To update, now-14 year old DS is 5'11" and still on track to be 6'1". Now-16 year old DD did reach 5'1" to her delight. |
| I'm 5' 11'' - 6', DS 19 is about 5' 8'', my wife is 5' 0''. 5' 9'' our son's predicted final height, but anything could happen. Difference between parents can play a big part in it which seems to be the case for our family. |
| DH and I are 5'7 and 5'8 so average but I trend tall and he trends short. DS is 15 and 5'10''. I think this was predicted, so we're spot on. |
Cousin with same parental stats, but he is 6'5" |
|
I’m 5’4 DH is 6’2. DS 1 and DS 2 both have consistently been in 70-80th percentile for height. DD has either been in the 95-99th or “off the charts.” They’re all mid/late elementary so we’ll see where it shakes out.
I’m one of 4. My mom is 5’9 (her entire family is tall) and my dad is 5’5. Both daughters 5’4 and both sons 5’8 so no one got my mom’s above average height. In my husband’s side of the family no one is over 6’ so that was a surprise for them. Genes are weird. |

I think it can really go either way. My DH’s family is a good case study (7 kids). His dad is 6’0” and his mom is 5’4”. Their kids are as follows:
DS1: 6’1” DD1: 5’8” DD2: 5’4” DD3: 5’4” DS2: 6’0” DS3: 5’10” DD4: 5’7” Nothing terribly surprising about any of them but there is definitely a range of heights. Our DS is currently being treated for very delayed puberty/potential growth disorder so family history has been a topic of conversation at our house lately… |
Similar in my family but my dad is taller. Mom is 5’8”, Dad is 5’9”. Three daughters: 5’5”, 5’3”, 5’4”. None of us got the tallish genes. |
| It is unpredictable at present. Height does not correlate with same-gender parent. |
|
Other than general genetic tendencies (child of two taller-than-average parents is likely to be taller than average, especially if grandparents were also tall. Child of two shorter-than-average parents is likely to be shorter than average), I think it can vary wildly.
One of my daughters is 5'8". One is 5'4" on a good day. One definitely has my family's body type; the other has her father's body type. |
Two of my closest friends (sisters) - one 5’11”, one 5’1”. Dad 5’10” mom 5’2”. |
| From my observations, boys take after moms and girls after dads. It makes sense, because boys inherit more genes from their mothers than from their fathers and 80% of height is genetic. In general, short moms have short sons and tall daughters if the dad is tall. Sometimes it's fascinating to see. I went to college with these 2 siblings, mom was a very tiny Vietnamese lady and the dad very tall, over 6'3. Their daughter was 6 ft tall and her brother barely 5'10. |
