Could someone give advice how to stop it?
I can’t be there in time to put the trash bin back , since trash pick up usually after I get to work . By the time I come sure enough there is poop. I don’t have a dog because I don’t want to deal with dog poop, but now every week I have to dive in to get poop out , because when one day I somehow missed it , it was a stinky mess it was smashed iso badly I had to hose during winter when I dont like running garden hose. Should I leave a note somewhere and tape it so people can read it ? I know I would never do that to other people. One day I was off and went to get trash bin early and noticed lady was approaching to my neighbor’s trash that was just emptied with her dog poop , I stopped and started looking at her , once she saw me she walked away from neighbors trash holding the poop probably looking for next trash bin. So she knows it’s not something she should be doing and only does when owner is not watching |
| No harm in putting a sign on your garbage lid that says "Please No Dog Poop. Thanks!" |
Or simply- Do not deposit dog waste in my (make it personal) garbage can. |
You should probably add something about a camera recording things...even if it’s not. |
| There are stickers you can get to put on your trash cans. I've seen one "No Dog Poop! We're serious!" which I expect it pretty effective. |
This is probably the best approach, OP. I'm sorry. I just walked my pup and his poop bag past about 50 trash cans (no collection Christmas Day), and deposited it in a community trash can meant for dog waste. And that's another thing. I don't know what type of community you live in, but if you have an HOA, it might be helpful to get some of these cans/bag stations in the neighborhood. I love them and use them all the time. Your offending doo dumper might do that as well. |
| If it's DC, the cans are the government's and public property. If not in DC, tip your garbage people will and they will tightly fit the lids back on and push your cans in to discourage poop pirates |
Doesn't matter who owns it; it is still rude to the person who has to use it and perfectly fine for OP to leave a note that it is a problem for her. Plenty other cans to use -- choose one where there's a dog in the yard barking at your dog. |
But that's the point, if it's govt property, everybody gets to use it within reason. No they cannot trespass onto your property to use it but if it's sitting right there on the street, then yeah. |

I think there is actually standard language in many cities' ordinances that you cannot put animal waste in someone else's trash can. But if the poop is in a secure plastic bag which is tied tightly it shouldn't be an issue, should it? Are they tossing an untied bag in there?
I don't have that issue, but I do have a chronic issue with people from a nearby apt building putting their trash in my bin. They have two parking lots, one on the same side of the building where their dumpster is, one on the other side and next to my backyard, where it is more convenient for them to use mine. |
Are you coming back to clean it when the dog poop comes out of the bag? No? Then no, you don’t get to use it. |
Don't most places now have those one-man trucks with the robot arm that picks up the bin? They don't get out of the truck at all. |
I’m not in DC, so I’m curious about this. If the cans are government property, how can they require a private citizen to take any responsibility for them? In NYC, your cans are your property, and you can be fined if you don’t deal with your trash properly. |
| The cans belong to the household. If you back your car over it, you are required to purchase a new one. I would place a note and it that didn’t stop the person, I would get a camera or sit in wait 😎 |
Pp’s making that up. In our area the trash company owns our trash cans (they give them to us, and we have to return them if we cancel our service with them), but we’re responsible for them and no, it’s not the case that “everyone gets to use it within reason”. Sorry, that’s a bunch of bs. |
