I have become aware recently after having heard rants from my upper middle class white early thirties husband, that there is a subgroup of men who have a lot of resentment and anger at the state of current affairs in our society.
- They feel young boys are not included in early education and socialization efforts as the focus is solely on empowering young girls and minorities - They feel resentful that they are being told they are "bad" or "toxic" and being called "rapist" - Women and minorities are hired for jobs and opportunities instead of them - Media is taken over by women and Minorities - Politics is taken over by special interest groups that does not necessarily favor their interests Is this a larger intellectual movement or not? |

It's a larger movement but it's not intellectual. It's a grievance movement.

Well, it's a movement. I'm not clear that it's "intellectual". I'd be interested to hear what they have to support their rants -- besides their own shared opinions.
- What would they like to see happen to young white boys? There's school, there's sports, there are a whole host of other activities if parents choose to pursue them. While it is true that there are efforts to support some members of minority groups and girls -- these efforts are linked to the under-representation and under-investment in these groups historically. - Who is calling them / saying these things? Note: If you're Justice Kavanaugh, that's because there are very specific concerns that need to be addressed. - Let's have some stats on that. (Note, the ones that I know about do not suggest anything close to this. Check the numbers on hiring, firing, and salaries.) - Which "media" and what do you mean by "taken over"? Again, provide some data. How many head anchors are women and/or minorities? How many women and minorities have their own news shows? - White men seem to be doing pretty fine as I see it -- particularly if they're Republican. How many Senators have been women and/or members of minority groups in the last 100 years? CEOs of major corporations? In any case, my point is that I don't feel these assertions are supported by data. tldr: Got any data to support the rant? I'll wait. |

A lot of these guys didn't even have the power, just felt that it was promised to them or somehow their due by virtue of being white men. That's why seeing a woman or minority get a job, any job, pisses them off. They start from an assumption that white men are the best qualified or most deserving, so if a woman or minority is hired the job was stolen from a white man. |

| Girls get massively more freebies and attention....look at every metric across the board. Boy are disciplined more than girls at almost every age in school. Boys by far and away are pumped much more full with drugs like ritalin at an early age compared to girls simply because they have more energy and low energy female teachers can't handle them. Women have higher rates of acceptance to college these days, so much so that the gender imbalance is getting so bad at some universities that colleges now have to go out of their way to recruit men. Men have had gender death gaps that have existed for forever now, yet women's health issues constantly get more funding. Men will die more from cancer, diabetes, heart disease, alzheimer's and almost every other disease at a higher rate than women, yet do you see the NFL and all sorts of other big companies/orgs taking on men's health? No, the PC crap forces them to have pink awareness days for breast cancer even though men 1 out of every 2 men will get cancer in their lifetime. It's also absolutely asinine the number of grants and other opportunities that are only specifically available to women in STEM. Just for existing you get extra bonus points tacked on to your funding application of you have a vagina in STEM. Maybe women simply go into STEM less out of free choice. Time to give men extra advantages when it comes to gender disparities in fields like nursing school admissions because men have penises. We also should be calling out the hypocrisy of billion dollar industries that have huge pay gap disparities for female models compared to male models. Men should be getting paid more in the fashion industry. |

It’s not a very sophisticated presentation of how some young white men feel, OP.
Of course power should not reside solely among white men. Those days are gone for good (in every sense). You can’t honestly deny that some of the rhetoric from the left isn’t basically expressed as “white men have been in power too long, so it is time to give others a turn.” And often this is expressed by white women blind to their own privilege. So that puts some young white men in a box. They personally may have enjoyed privilege, but they may be getting the message not just that they should respect the abilities and potential of others, but also sit down and stand back at the game of life so others can take charge. They may be in their 20s and 30s but they are already being treated like “dead white males” in certain circles. It’s a shame there isn’t a more nuanced way to deal with them. It’s a shame to older liberals to see so many younger Proud Boy types. The tension isn’t going to abate simply because Trump leaves if the goal of the left is make everyone as uncomfortable in their own skin as oppressed minorities may have been. I’m not sure this country has much of a future with that mindset. |
