Florida had 11,234 NEW coronovirus cases in just one day... yesterday.

What is going on in Florida??

It's not from Thanksgiving because that was two weeks ago.

If you look at the chart (link below), they've never really gotten a handle on new infections... I don't understand why it's so difficult for the residents of Florida to take precautions?

I understand they have a Republican governor, but people do still have free will, power of thought & common sense, do they not?
Yes, Florida gets a lot of redneck jokes, but there are some very wealthy & successful people who live there, I just don't understand...

It absolutely is from thanksgiving. People gathered, got covid, walked around w/o knowing for a few days and it spreads exponentially from there. Those are the cases blowing up now.

Case positivity rate and deaths are not as drastically surging--positivity rate has been fairly consistent, actually--as in other parts of the country, however, like CA even. Testing is part of the answser to your question.

Thanksgiving and secondary/tertiary spread overlapping.

Have you seen pictures from FL? They're acting like there's no virus. I have close family there so I hear a lot about it (and see on social media).

OP is correct.
I just looked at the chart and even in the weeks before Thanksgiving, there were many days that they had 10,000+, 9,000+ and 8,000+.

That vm could be attributed to Halloween, but even before Halloween their numbers were really high in the 7,000 - 9,000 range.

I just think there are a lot of very ignorant people who live there, who think the rules don't apply to them or that they're immune.

It's actually not spreading exponentially, but okay.

I live in Florida - the governor is encouraging people to behave as if there is no virus, and he has since day one. To the extent anyone takes cues from those in charge, DeSantis has a lot of blood on his hands.

Luckily in my city we have leadership that is at least trying to keep us alive. But that is not the case in a lot of the rest of the state. It's really baffling, and awful.

That number isn't actually that high compared to other states. Right now, Florida is kind of middlingly-bad for the US, per capita (Illinois, where I live, also had 11K new cases yesterday but has 6 million fewer people than Florida).

I don't understand the thought process behind this. Haven't they heard about the people who lost their lives or are suffering long-term impacts?

Hopefully all of them will make a full recovery.

Same here. I have friends (supposedly educated smart people) eating in indoors in restaurants and going to Disney World. Then they're all like "we're being safe!" but in their pictures you can see their masking is haphazard at best.

and thats less cases per million people than CA whats your point.

They've heard about it, but it seems distant and at least until recently the news was focused more on how things were terrible in the Midwest or now California or the Northeast. We're in Palm Beach County. DD is in 2nd grade and ALL of her friends parents are just over Covid. Many of them did stay home in the spring and were cautious for a while but now they're done. The moms are getting together for girls night out and having the kids play together without masks. I see pictures on social media daily of people in the gym unmasked or a little league games, or going out to eat. There are enough people down here who are just not worried about it that I don't actually understand why the spread isn't worse.

My kids understand why they can't get together with their friends, but when I see all the posts on social media of our friend groups getting together without us I begin to wonder if there's something wrong with how we're handling this. And then I remember that there's actually a global pandemic despite the way so many people here are acting. But seeing so many people unconcerned does mess with your perception of risk.

they're also at fewer cases per 1M than NY, NJ and VA. nearly the same as MD

it is ignorant to cherry pick data and intentionally provide no context.
