| I drove my snowbird sister down to Florida last week and it was horrifying how no one gives a damn about the virus. |
DP, and the NYT data clearly show that FL is middle-of-the-pack right now. It can be true that people there are handling covid terribly, but also that numerically it's doing surprisingly ok. They're testing ~100K people a day, too, so not too terrible considering the number of positives (that's around an 11% positivity rate, which is bad, but not abnormal in the US right now). Also, what high-profile politicians do <> what state health departments do, FWIW. There's a lot of bluster from the top but the foot soldiers are usually the same, boring bureaucrats they always have been. I think people in DC need to get out to, say, rural MD or VA and see that there's a lot of covid denial right in your own backyard. |
What is with the obsession with Florida? There are only about 40 other states doing worse right now per capita, including MD, and DC isn’t far behind. http://www.91-divoc.com/pages/covid-visualization/?chart=states-normalized&highlight=Florida&show=us-states&y=both&scale=linear&data=cases-daily-7&data-source=jhu&xaxis=right&extra=Rhode%20Island%2COhio%2CDistrict%20of%20Columbia%2CNew%20York#states-normalized |
They would if they were illegally accessing state computer systems. |

Florida does not care.
Restrictions are minimal, as is mask compliance. My relatives near Orlando have been going to public events like farmers markets, parades, zoos, eating out at restaurants in large groups, attending weddings and baby showers, even the annual gala for the fire fighters and their spouses still took place. I am always seeing posts of crowds with no masks in sight on their Facebook feeds. |
| I’m guessing that people who don’t care about the virus like many in Florida also don’t test as frequently as areas of the country where they care about keeping the virus contained. I’m in a city that voted for Trump and we had a 90% positive test rate the other day. 40% today. Not enough tests given and many who don’t believe in testing. |
+1 on this. We in NE are sitting here and waiting for snowstorm and at least have some excuses. I guess crappy leadership cancels that weather advantage. |
| Will just the sheer number of daily cases mean we reach herd immunity at some point? Perhaps? |
Once again , you are wrong. Gov DeSantis made an executive order stating he would preempt any fines and punishments confined to local rules. Most FL counties have mask mandates and there is a mandate in my county. I wear a mask everywhere I go and also see everyone else wearing masks. So I’m confused as to why you would say what you said ..??? |
| California had 33,000 cases yesterday. |
