Applying for K - wondering about pros/cons of the 3 schools.
I know they're all going to have major similarities being ADW k-8 schools, but any thing other info would be helpful. |
| OLV feels more old school catholic with a very strict principal while HTS is more progressive. OLV has more diversity and generally seems more welcoming. |

HTS parent here. DD has attended since 2nd grade, we could it be happier with the school. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty trying to accommodate students and parents due to the pandemic. The principal and his staff know all the children by name and they truly care about each and every one of them, the teachers made socially distanced house calls to get to know the students and the parents before school started, and all staff have worked hard to focus their teaching styles on what works for the children -even if it means to be flexible and change mid stream. The counselor and the staff are incredibly supportive and DD, who initially suffered from anxiety because of the changes to her schedule during the last 8 months, has finally adjusted and looks forward to cyber schooling.
In terms of the type of Catholic education the children receive what I refer to as a “Catholic light” and progressive education, they focus less on tradition and more on social justice and embracing change. This is a major difference between OLV and HT, Which seems more conservative. As far as diversity we know that OLV has more children from Latin America and Europe (embassy or World Bank families) while HTS children tend to be primarily Caucasian with a few Ethiopians and Europeans or Asians -but not many. |
Great info about HTS. Definitely our first choice for DC |
| Bump. Any info on LFS? |
| DS applied to St Barts this year and apparently they have way more applicants than slots for every grade |
| HTS is the most competitive for non-parishoners |
| Not on your list but we chose Saint John the Evangelist in silver spring. At some point next year I’ll need to return to the office at least a couple days a week likely (fed) and they are super close to forest Glen metro which is not one of the ones closing. They are also super welcoming to non-Catholics and non-parishioners if that’s you. |
Where are you a parishioner? That is likely your only shot for next year. If the answer is nowhere I would cross parochials off your list. |
This is very true. HT is particularly challenging to get into if you aren’t a parishioner even in non-pandemic times. |
OP. Parishoner at LFS |
| we are at LFS. it's a wonderful school. they've been open since sept without incident. academics are strong. traditional curriculum. both my kids are thriving there. I know they already had waitlists for some grades prior to covid and now has very long waitlists. being a parishioner you might have a shot. faith component is very emphasized, which we like. |
my kid is applying for kindergarten and my family has been part of the parish for nearly 30 thirty years, i really hope we have a shot. i went through my sacraments there. do you think that will help a bit? |
Not sure. It’s a tough application year |
| I don’t think OLV is as good as some other options like blessed sacrament, st barts |
