GFR’s footprint includes the wealthiest area in VA, maybe all of the DMV. The 3 closest High Schools have won boys state championships in VA’s highest classification in recent years (Langley in ‘22, Herndon in ‘25, South Lakes in ‘19), despite having a number of high level players that attend private schools in VA and DC. GFR has attracted some of the most experienced coaches in the area in recent years, in GD, MW, NM, etc. They have neighboring clubs of Herndon and Valor that aren’t exactly tearing it up. It’s a real failure that this club is contracting and wasn’t able to take advantage of the changing landscape over the past couple of years.
Where did the state champ Herndon HS players play? With Herndon club?
No. And the SLHS players didn’t play for GFR in 2019. My son was on that team and it was mostly Loudoun, Arlington and McLean players. Having wealthy people in a town or towns does not produce amazing soccer players. Strong clubs that have been chucking for decades does. GFR is still in its infancy compared to those 3 clubs.
Almost all the boys on the Herndon HS wining team from the spring played soccer for Herndon club. The head coach is the TD at Herndon club.
Your first sentence is true but not the second. The Herndon HS head coach is not affiliated with HYS.
