Can we give our daughter our desired name?

We want to name her Maggie. Yes We realize it's a nickname, but names that could be used as the long form we don't really like, the one exception is Margaux, but that happens to be our niece's name.

We want to name her Maggie because the song Maggie May is special to us, We had our first date at a place called Maggie's. And Dh's aunt Maggie who he was close to and who passed before I met him, predicted he would fall in love and marry the next person he dated.

The reason we are hesitant is our nice Margaux's nickname is Maggie though she hasn't gone by it in years. She will be 14 near 15 when our daughter is born, and she is happy to be having a girl cousin even tough they are far apart in age.

I know we could just ask our niece her thoughts, but I don't want to if 1. it would be weird to use the name 2. I don't want to pressure on her, her mom ( my sister) can be kind of weird about these things, like she gets bothered if coworkers have the same outfit as her.

Thoughts?

We passed our preferred name to avoid a two nieces having the same name- I still regret it years later

Don’t ask your niece unless you’re prepared for her or another family member to tell you they’re uncomfortable with it, and then not using the name as a result. If you’re gonna use the name regardless, don’t ask out of fake concern because decent chance it will backfire when your niece says she doesn’t like it!

Fwiw I think it’s fine, and you don’t need to justify in so many ways why you “need” to use this name. Just saying you like the name should be plenty.

If they are 15 years apart, I don't think it's such a big deal. Think it is a bit odd to use both the same name AND the same nickname. I think I would just name her Maggie.

I wouldn't give your daughter your niece's name. Is she really going to feel comfortable saying no?

Also, fwiw as it's just an opinion, I know two people who have a nickname for a real name. As adults they hate it. I even know someone who gave nickname to first, realized the mistake and gave second a full name and call her nn.

Surely there is some name besides Margaux that can be shortened to Maggie that you can live with.

I named my child the same name as my cousin’s kid. I think it would be a lovely tribute. Name your kid what you want to.

No, she needs a full name as an option as she grows up. I would do Margaret, but you could actually get away with Mary or Madeline and use nn Maggie. What was aunt Maggie's full name? Or use Maggie as a middle name.

^^ Other possible full names are Megan or Marjorie

What was the beloved aunt's full name? Use that. Then you can say she was named after a family member.

OP here. Just to clarify, we aren't going to name her Margaux. We thought about the longer version name just she'll have options when she's older. Margaux is the only name we like of the many options such as Margaret, Megan etc. Even still we wouldn't name her Margaux.

Aunt Maggie's name was Maggie.

Op again, we like Jane as a middle name so, Maggie Jane.

Jane Maggie doesn't really work.

That was my girls name too (and never had a girl). Go for it, great name. As someone who had a cousin (15 years younger) given my same but unusual name it never bothered me.

Name her Maggie! If she wants something more formal she can go by Jane or change her name.

Maggie Jane is sooooooo common. You are going to be disappointed.

Maggie Jane
Ella Rose
Lauren Grace

Blah blah blah

Yes using the cousins name is also wrong.

Re: family sharing name

It is not a big deal. We have two sets of cousins with the same name. The age makes it even LESS of a big deal. Your Maggie will be 15 and Margaux will be 30!!! Really not a big deal.

Re: “Maggie”.
I really prefer a formal name. At least then she has the option when she’s older. Margaret is lovely.
