My MIL's name is Marguerite, but she goes by Maggie. |
|
Please please don't give her a nickname as the primary name. Everyone I know, including my mother (Molly) hated it. Everyone always asks them "what is your real name?" My mother was named after an aunt Molly whose real name was Maria (pronounced Mariah), but my grandparents liked the nickname only.
If you go with Margaux, spell it Margot instead, then it isn't exactly like your niece. That is the more classic French spelling anyway. |
If Aunt Maggie’s name was Maggie, I’d name her Maggie. |
|
You can't name her Margeaux: that's too weird since it's your niece's name.
But you can name her Margaret and call her Maggie and you've solved two problems: 1) she has a fallback option in case she doesn't like Maggie someday and 2) it's clear you aren't stealing your niece's nickname, because your baby is named Margaret. Everyone will call her Maggie regardless. |

I love Magali. Why not branch out? |
+1. |

How about Maria + G-name + Jane?
Maria Gabriella Jane Maria Gwendolyn Jane Maria Gwyneth Jane Maria Greta Jane Maria Guinevere Jane Maria Genevieve (no Jane) |
Cool story, bro. |
| Anything that starts with an M works...in addition to the many good suggestions, Meredith, MaryAnn, MaryJane, Melanie, Miranda, Mabel, Maeve, Maribel, Maxine, etc. Just pick a real name...Maggie is not a proper name. |

Two names that together shorten to Maggie as a combo nickname could be the way to go.

I don't care about anything in this thread except DON'T saddle your kid with a nn only. Give HER the choice later in life. If she wants to be a professional and go by Maggie, great. But give her the option to go by a full name.
Many (of course not all) grandmothers didn't work outside the home. They didn't need full names, necessarily. |

Maggie is a great name and it’s perfectly fine to have a cousin with the same name. I do and it’s never been an issue. I was the older one and felt sort of honored that my aunt and uncle gave my baby cousin my name.
And I’ve known two Maggie’s in my life whose full name was Maggie. Great choice. Great name! |

If you can be named Margaux or Margaret and go by Maggie, then you can be named Maggie and go by Margaux or Margaret. If your name is Maggie Jane and you like Jane more than Maggie, you can go by Jane. You can go by M. Jane Smith. You can go by MJ. You can even be named Maggie Jane and go by Skippy. You’re not limiting her options by naming her Maggie. Your niece isn’t named Maggie and she hasn’t been going by Maggie for years. The name has very special meaning for you and your dh (and other relatives, because of Aunt Maggie). Use it. It’s a great name and one that could definitely be used in the workplace 30 years from now. (Who’s going to judge her informal name? Jaxxon? Please.)
Congratulations. |
