| You're really boxing her in with Maggie. It's nice to have a real name that has some options associated with it. Like your niece, who got tired of Maggie (it sounds like) and was able to call herself Margaux. |
It’s really not “wrong” unless there are other factors at play: if the family member has died and using the name would be a tribute. Or if the family member is loathed from all sides. Or the if the family member is very close to you, and close in age. |
You do you. My kids are teens but if any of my siblings named their kid the same name as mine, I’d be horrified. I guess it depends on the family. My sister was throwing my name around with some sort of weird spelling and that also seemed wrong. |
NP I think op should name her Margaret and use Maggie. It is a pain to change your name and most people suffer with their name rather than change it. Or name her Margaux. My sister and her cousin have the same name and all is well. |
Horrified should be reserved for something really horrific like when children are separated from their parents or eaten by a shark or war. You don't own any names! |
| What about Marguerite May, Maggie for short? |
| I would do a full name and use it as a nickname so when she's older she has a more adult option. |
| We had a caregiver named Annie. Not Ann. Her given name was Annie. |
|
How about Margot, nn Maggie?
Think about your kid's future and give her an option to switch to a formal name for professional setting. |
|
OP here.
We aren't opposed to giving her a longer name and using Maggie as a nickname, it's just there aren't any longer names we like, or like as much as Maggie/MaggieJane |
| Marjorie? |
| Magnolia? |
| Magnolia, Magdalena |
| FWIW, Maggie means Pearl... |
| My grandmother's given name was Maggie. |
