4 kids - to be or not to be?

Anonymous
We have 3 (girl, girl, then boy). We have toyed with having a 4th, but of course there are LOTS of questions and concerns. I’m 41. We are blessed with typically developed children. Those odds change. Could we love all? Yes. But what complications and challenges do we want to invite into our lives? Both parents work now, but I could pull back. We would love for the boy to have a brother, but obviously there are no guarantees there. DH is from family of 4 — he is the oopsie, 10yrs younger than his next closest sibling. He loves his family dynamic. I’m from a family of 3 kids where my youngest brother is the oopsie and my parents totally paid no attention to him. I would also really consider walking into traffic if somehow the potential 4th pregnancy was multiples.

What have your experiences been?

I think your family is complete.

I'm pregnant with my 4th and so excited. I vote go for it.

It’s not something strangers can tell you, tbh.

Pp- I have 3 girls and this one happens to be a boy - so thrilled. Even thinking about a fifth after this one. But I'm a lot younger.

Not to be...

I am from a family of 3 kids , and my parents are from families of 3 kids too. I have 3. I think it is our lucky number. Mine are all 15 months apart. I don't want to start again as they are 7, 8, 10.

You are 41. Throw away the birth control and see what happens. Nature decides?

I would wait until you have the fourth before you claim you are going for the fifth. Kids are expensive!

I had a girl, girl, boy and went for the little brother. At almost 40, I delivered a girl. She is marvelous!

41 was when my aunt had a child with Down syndrome. Be prepared. It can be challenging to a family to have a SN child/sibling.

You can screen for Down syndrome — but you’re right that SN become increasingly common as you get older.

I’m trying to decide on a 4th too, OP. I’m a bit younger at 37, and always wanted 4 (still do), but also worry about rocking the boat...

We just adopted our 4th (boy) after 3 biological kids. Boy/girl/girl/boy. Oldest 10, youngest 21 months. I am very happy.
