DC parents leave kids in car for wine tasting

I do think they are definitely headed for divorce. Probably just wanted to get this plea agreement in first. Did you see the photo on the WTOP page. They are as far apart from each other as possible.

What happened to that poor woman who left her kids in the car so she could go to a job interview?

Here is the text from the WTOP article:

WASHINGTON — Two D.C. parents accused of leaving their young children in a chilly car while they attended a wine tasting have accepted a plea deal.

Christophe Lucas, 41, and Jennie Chang, 45, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree cruelty to children in D.C. Superior Court Thursday.

In court, they admitted they left their children, who are close to 2 and 3 years old, in the car while they went to the Ris restaurant in the District’s West End neighborhood in January, as temperatures hovered around 35 degrees. Prosecutors said the children were wearing coats but not hats or gloves, and one was not wearing socks or shoes.

The couple did not make a statement in court. However Chang’s lawyer Danny Onorato released this statement to WTOP:

“Jennie Chang and Christophe Lucas are caring, dedicated parents who had an unfortunate lapse of judgment a month ago. Ms. Chang and Mr. Lucas were monitoring and watching their children from about 50 feet away, and the parents are adamant that the children were not in any danger. They realize that their actions were wrong and they are eager to place this matter behind them. They’re pleased that the matter is now resolved and they can focus on raising their children. As you know, this case will be dismissed in December.”

Lucas and Chang did not disagree with the prosecution’s account. But Onorato insisted in court that the car was always within eyesight and the parents used a phone left in the car to monitor the children.

Wow, by their lawyers statement they have learned nothing. They still seem to think what they did was wrong b/c they got caught.

I am sure they will never do it again.

Maybe not that particular thing, but they have terrible judgment, so who knows what the future will bring. Good judgment cannot be taught in a parenting class, IMHO.

I agree what they did was terribly stupid. But if skills can't be taught, what is the solution? Surely we do not want to remove these kids from their home, right?

Why would they go wine tasting together if they are headed for divorce?

This incident prompted the divorce. She probably wanted to bail on the event, and he probably forced her to go and leave the kids in the car. Figure it out, pp.

How can one tell?
Any updates on this couple or your speculation?

Were they drug tested? It seems like something a crackhead would do.

I know I’m reviving an old thread, but I think about this incident all the time. When it first happened I had a newborn and while I thought it was insane to leave small children in the car, I thought maybe it was different bc they were slightly older. Now that my kids are 4 and 3 I am so shocked by this. I hope that they became better parents as a result of this scandal.

So- parents left kids in cold car, & they suck.
McCann’s left kids alone in warm hotel room, one was abducted, but they need sympathy?
Both sets suck.
