"Optional lifting sessions"
"Optional practices"
"Optional shoot a rounds"

Speaks doesn't necessarily run these off season workouts but he is well aware of which players are attending/are committed to the program.

Gonzaga also operates like this but it's not as emphasized.

IAC schools given they are smaller in size (except for GP), most kids generally play a 2nd sport because their athletic programs need the bodies (especially at the smaller co-ed schools)

Do SJC (or other school) kids transfer out if they don’t make Varsity as a sophomore? Or if they make Varsity but are looking at minimum playing time until senior year?

I don’t recall any players transferring out of SJC since Speaks became the coach. A few have been dismissed from the school for disciplinary reasons. Speaks has also allowed players to play football without interfering if they choose to do so.

Unless there is one this year, the only SJC varsity football player playing lax in the 2 years prior was Duenkel and he was the kicker. A kid can play 2 sports at JV at SJC and is highly discouraged at the varsity level at every single sport. The school literally tells applying families to look elsewhere if that's what they want.

My son played FB at St. Johns and was never told to look elsewhere when he was applying. The made up stories are hysterical.
Swope(LB) and Alverez(K) also played football all 4 years. Tasty also played.

You aren't helping, only solidifying the argument. You named 1 deep bench player, a kicker (that was the Duenkel joke) and a jv player. If you weren't told the unspoken truth while applying then your kid wasn't a recruited player of any standing.

I second that - when we toured with Speaks he was very clear that there are no varsity lacrosse players who play another sport at the school. I appreciate that he did that though - he was honest.

BS

Not really. My kid goes to SJC but doesn't play lacrosse or football. I've done a number of Men's club events and I've talked with other dads. There is not out and out statement that you can't play both sports but when I ask other Dads (whose son's are freshman) who have sons on the lacrosse team and I knew played football. All of them have stated "Timmy is concentrating on lacrosse this year and well see what happens moving forward." that answer to me reads like code for Speaks has told them no football.

There is a freshman lacrosse player that is also playing football.

whoa...one kid. Wow.

The point is that Speaks doesn't stop kids from playing football. It's up to the kid and his parents.

oh, one kid proves. gotcha. So one freshman lacrosse player proves...I'm not sure you understand proof.

Do us all a favor and go watch a SCJ Football game and let us know if you think your Lax Bro son that goes to whatever other school would have the ability to play football at SJC and get back to me.

Better yet don't. I already know the answer.

Hmmm. I'll let me daughter know. She's probably willing to give it a go but she's probably too tough for those boys. As I said, my kid doesn't play football or lax at SJC.

And I've seen both teams. There absolutely kids from both teams that could play and start for both teams. Sorry if that offends your sense of athleticism. Lax guys aren't laying OL but if you are special athlete you can pretty much do whatever you want.

ok Mr. Intelligent Code Reader who isn't affiliated with the SJC lacrosse or football program but has his ear to the ground. You are saying that Speaks told all but 1 freshman kid that they cannot play football at SJC? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense...PFFFT

Most of these people talking about Speaks haven't even meet the man. The hate he gets is wild. Great Guy

Im looking forward to watching St. Johns play this spring. The new offensive coordinator will make a big difference. He is a significant up grade.

Boys Latin
St. Paul's
Gilman
Taft
St. Anthony

then you have your typical WCAC battles

PVI - WIN
GC - WIN
GZ - WIN

But the opening games will be another challenge for the Cadets.

Tough schedule for the Cadets, especially for the first month but understand the bottom of the WCAC is very weak (nothing SJC can do about it since they are league games) however it brings down the overall quality of their SOS by a lot. Ireton, Ryken, O'Connell, Carroll, and Bishop McNamara would likely lose to JV teams from the IAC.

As for the Cadets non-league games, here is my breakdown:

BL is always top 20 in the nation, it's the only sport the school emphasizes so expect another tough contest here.
St Pauls was young last year and brings back a core of their team, they will be a dark-horse in the MIAA this spring.
Gilman, obviously a very historical program, has been treading water in the MIAA due to some coaching instability the past 5+ years. The Greyhounds made it to the MIAA semi-finals last Spring, so hopefully it's a sign the program is headed in the right direction.
Taft had a rough start to the season last year as they had a new coaching staff, I assume they will be better as they finished the season strong in the New England West league.
St. Anthony, the Friars are always elite and will play anyone, expect a battle here!
Severn, middle-of-the-road MIAA team. For a tiny co-ed school, their starters are very good but overall the Admirals have little depth to compete for 4 full quarters with the elite programs in the MIAA. Severn also has a new Head Coach this Spring so I expect it might be a long year for the Admirals this Spring.

As for the WCAC, the biggest challenger to the Cadets will be Paul VI. The Panthers were young last Spring. Gonzaga graduated a ton last year, expect a re-building year on Eye-Street. DeMatha has a new Head Coach so it will be interesting to see how the Stags adjust this year. Good Counsel should be better under Dane Smith in his 3rd season, but I'm not sure how strong GC was even last year as the Falcons played a cup-cake non-league schedule.

Predict SJC is 4-1 going into the WCAC games.
Anonymous
Make that 5-1
Anonymous
I think the Cadets go 4-2

Wins over Gilman, St. Pauls, Severn and Taft

Loses to BL and St Anthonys

2 and 4 probably. Didn't they go like 0h and 4 or 5 last year with a lot of the same teams?

Same schools but different teams.

They beat BL and go 5-1 to open the season. They have lost 2 close back to back games to St. Anthony’s. They could get a win this year.

Good Counsel schedule is out. Should be at worst 5-2 entering league play. Picked up GP and dropped Bullis, smart.

Bullis will be better than Prep this Spring.

Prep will be in a rebuild mode

Why is prep playing WCAC teams?
Anonymous
The 4 games Prep has posted are tough.
