"Optional lifting sessions"
"Optional practices"
"Optional shoot a rounds"
Speaks doesn't necessarily run these off season workouts but he is well aware of which players are attending/are committed to the program.
Gonzaga also operates like this but it's not as emphasized.
IAC schools given they are smaller in size (except for GP), most kids generally play a 2nd sport because their athletic programs need the bodies (especially at the smaller co-ed schools)
Do SJC (or other school) kids transfer out if they don’t make Varsity as a sophomore? Or if they make Varsity but are looking at minimum playing time until senior year?
I don’t recall any players transferring out of SJC since Speaks became the coach. A few have been dismissed from the school for disciplinary reasons. Speaks has also allowed players to play football without interfering if they choose to do so.
Unless there is one this year, the only SJC varsity football player playing lax in the 2 years prior was Duenkel and he was the kicker. A kid can play 2 sports at JV at SJC and is highly discouraged at the varsity level at every single sport. The school literally tells applying families to look elsewhere if that's what they want.
My son played FB at St. Johns and was never told to look elsewhere when he was applying. The made up stories are hysterical.
Swope(LB) and Alverez(K) also played football all 4 years. Tasty also played.
You aren't helping, only solidifying the argument. You named 1 deep bench player, a kicker (that was the Duenkel joke) and a jv player. If you weren't told the unspoken truth while applying then your kid wasn't a recruited player of any standing.
I second that - when we toured with Speaks he was very clear that there are no varsity lacrosse players who play another sport at the school. I appreciate that he did that though - he was honest.
BS
Not really. My kid goes to SJC but doesn't play lacrosse or football. I've done a number of Men's club events and I've talked with other dads. There is not out and out statement that you can't play both sports but when I ask other Dads (whose son's are freshman) who have sons on the lacrosse team and I knew played football. All of them have stated "Timmy is concentrating on lacrosse this year and well see what happens moving forward." that answer to me reads like code for Speaks has told them no football.
There is a freshman lacrosse player that is also playing football.
whoa...one kid. Wow.
The point is that Speaks doesn't stop kids from playing football. It's up to the kid and his parents.
oh, one kid proves. gotcha. So one freshman lacrosse player proves...I'm not sure you understand proof.
Do us all a favor and go watch a SCJ Football game and let us know if you think your Lax Bro son that goes to whatever other school would have the ability to play football at SJC and get back to me.
Better yet don't. I already know the answer.
Hmmm. I'll let me daughter know. She's probably willing to give it a go but she's probably too tough for those boys. As I said, my kid doesn't play football or lax at SJC.
And I've seen both teams. There absolutely kids from both teams that could play and start for both teams. Sorry if that offends your sense of athleticism. Lax guys aren't laying OL but if you are special athlete you can pretty much do whatever you want.
