Why are Northern Kids Flocking to Southern Universities?

You would be surprised.

My dc metro area kid is at Bama, and I’m stunned by the wealth of students. Their social media is filled with mansions, fabulous vacations (think yachts in Greece), high end cars on campus, kids picking up the tab at bars/restaurants or shopping sprees, etc. Kids are coming from all over the country and around the world.

I’m hearing similar stories from friends with kids at Auburn, WF, Clemson, etc.

Different poster,

At first i didn’t believe the above so I looked up the data on the nyt article on top 1a% kids and where they go to school and was shocked to find that Bama , auburn and uga almost had CU-Boulder level concentration of 1% kids on campus

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/01/18/upshot/some-colleges-have-more-students-from-the-top-1-percent-than-the-bottom-60.html

Crazy

North east publics (Pitt, Penn state) have half or one third the concentration

It’s 100% because they can party their butts off and still get passing grades.

Southern universities are the mythological fun college experience with football and frats and sororities that party and drink like fish. And classes are easy so you can do it all. I know, I grew up down south and had friends at every single one of these schools. Many of those friends’ kids now go to those same schools.

Serious students, both then and now, rarely go to Clemson, Bama and Auburn and never go to Ole Miss or LSU unless forced by family tradition. UGA gets more of a mix as they have always had good honors programs but the really smart driven kids down south go to GA Tech, Vandy, W&L and Duke.

I live in Alabama and have visited Texas and Florida many, many times.

The summers in the south are so hot and humid, people are not outside in the summers. They're inside with air conditioning on. It's too hot to hike, do any outdoor sports and even be at the pool for very long.

Summers last 6 months, in Alabama from April until October. TX and FL are even hotter than AL.

Winter in FL is nice, but in Alabama it's not particularly pleasant, it's cold and rains often. Again, no one does outdoor sports in the winter for that reason.

So let's be honest. Weather is not the reason they pick southern colleges. If you wanted nice weather you'd go to California.

It is weather and fun southern culture. Nashville and Austin two of the coolest towns in America right now. Yellowstone is the most popular show on television. Teens are bombarded by fun sunny college students on their social media algorithms. The most famous sorority girl accounts are USC and southern sororities at Alabama, SMU and Georgia. No kid is eager to go freeze their ass off and wear a parka for five months.

What does Yellowstone have to do with this discussion? We aren’t talking about colleges in Montana or Wyoming.

No she’s a D1 gymnast.

That’s not why she’s famous.

That gal is far prettier, smarter, and more talented (D1 gymnast) than the hideous Kardashian skanks.

It's not just the body, she's adorable. Her face is angelic. Naturally I might add.

The multi-millionaire Morning Joe host, Joe, sent his boy(s) to Alabama too. I'm safely assuming Joe has the connections to send his kids to Ivies or Georgetown, if he really wanted. Nope. His rich kids wanted that southern university experience.

My daughter went south for college (Florida) for the weather. For the most part, the school year is during the best part of the season. It's still hot in August and September, but October through April is pretty nice. And she's done in early May. My other daughter wants to go somewhere cold. She hates the heat.

Which one is more conventionally hotter?

Yet, those skanks have become billionaires with zero actual talent

She isn’t worth the money because of her gymnastics, hon. It is all about her social media following, which is because she fuels little boys wet dreams with booty shots

We are touring schools in the northeast and southeast. Southern schools are prettier, less expensive, and because of athletics driving funding, surprisingly resource rich. It’s hard to justify the cost of some of the northeast schools when we are getting better resources at state schools. And in honor programs our kid will be in small class sizes and have amazing opportunities. She likes the idea of prestigious schools, but for the value and opportunity, she may end up down south. If you haven’t toured somewhere like alabama, auburn, Georgia or ole miss, you might be surprised. And you also might be surprised at the acceptance rate and requirements at somewhere like Georgia or Georgia tech.

Going to a southern university can be a very good choice for some students. But being in an honors program does not mean all your classes will be small, and what's so "amazing" about the opportunities compared to strong schools in the northeast? Plus, you can't generalize about southern universities being more "resource rich" than northeastern schools, especially since some of the latter have huge endowments and more spending per pupil.
